Restarting records at 1 in multiple layouts

Hello,

I am constructing a database in Filemaker 7. Here is my problem. When I open my file I constructed a menu with 8 different fields. When you clic a field you enter a layout that I made. Every field button has a different layout.

My problem is. When I want to enter information in my database, my records star at 1. I get this but I want to know if it is possible fort the records to start at 1 in every layout that I created.

Right now, I have 8 different layouts and lets say for example I enter the field button POOL that I created a specific layout for. I enter ten names which represent 10 records. Ok fine.

But when I change filed buttons and want to enter records in the second layout called PLASTICS, the records do not star at 1 again. they continue from 10 on because I entered 10 records in another layout.

Hope someone understand what I am saying. I basically want the records to start at 1 but in every layout that i created

Thanks

Do you have multiple tables in your solution? In other words, do you have a table for Pool, a table for Plastics, etc., and are your layouts based on these different tables?

When you goto define database... there are three tabs... the first is tables, the second is fields and the third is relationships... if in tables you have more than one table.. you have multiple tables...

the point he was getting at is that if you are navigating between multiple layouts attached to either two different or on table occurance that points to one table (as in a reference to a table found in the relationships tab in define database) then all the information is still stored in the same table... so it continues from your last record... if however your plastics layout refered to a different table occurance that reffered to a different table occurance that inturn refered to a different table with different fields etc.. then your records would start from 0...

Breaking it down

Pool Layout --> Attached to "POOLS" TableOccurance --> Attached to "Main" Table...

+

Plastics Layout --> Attached to "PLASTICS" TableOccurance --> Attached to "Main" Table

= Continuing records because though the table occurances are different, they refer to the same table...

else if you had lets say 2 tables that both referred to individual tables i.e.

POOL Layout --> Attached to "POOL" TableOccurance --> Attached to "POOL" Table

+

Plastics Layout --> Attached to "PLASTICS" TableOccurance --> Attached to "PLASTICS" Table

= NON-Continuing records because the different table occurances refer to different tables.. i.e. they will start from different record numbers when you go from layout to layout ...

referring to my previous post though, it wouldnt really matter if you just set your buttons that take you to a different layout to perform the script

Goto Layout

Goto Record [First]

Hello Thanks very much for answering quickly. I get what you are saying. I was wondering if it would be possible for me to send you my database. It would be easier for you to see the mess I did..:)

I really appreciate the help.

Your attachment doesn't download....can you just zip it or stuff it and then upload it again?

I still can't download it...can you save it as a different type of compressed file, like .zip or .sit?

There aren't any records in your file so I don't understand what you want to do 100%. But what I do see is the following:

You've created multiple fields for the same thing, i.e. nom1, nom2, nom3, nom4. This is not a good way to construct a relational database. You should have just 1 field for name, 1 field for address, 1 field for date, etc. Then you create new records every time you want to add a new contact.

My French is so-so at best but I can guess from what you're doing that you're categorizing contacts by pool styles, patio furniture, renovations?? If so, there is probably a better way of handling that, but I'm not really clear enough about your objective to offer advice.

Hello again

I created different fields for different layouts because if I use one defined field for my 8 or 9 layouts, everytime I create a new record, it replaces the one that I did before.

What i basically want is like seperate databases (fopr every layout) so that when I click on a menu button the records start at 1.

I can send you an example with records if you want to be more clear i will add it to this reply

You will see in the file that i have 38 records entered. An if for example you clic on the first menu button called "piscines creusées" you will see recprs starting at 1

but if you return to the main menu and clic the second menu button (piscines semi-creusée) you will have to go to the record 10 or 11 to see the entries. Whta I want is for them to star at 1 again

Thanks very much

I'm still not clear on what you want...I think my small French vocabulary is the biggest problem. What do the words "creusees" and "hors-terres" mean, and how are they related to the contacts?

testament, could you please please put your skill level to novice... people here that attempt to help you try and do so in terms appropriate to your skill...

There isn't a guideline for the Self Evaluated Skill Levels. Your interpretation of Intermediate can be, and probably will be different that the next person. BTW, wouldn't the answer be the same no matter what the skill level?

Hello again.

Your explanation on the tables was correct I tried it and the records started at zero evrytime. The only thing is that i have to reconstrcut the whole database over again because in the one i sent you I basically had 1 table and multiple fields.

What i was wondering is that if it was possible to star the records at 1 even if i had only one table

and as for the the descirptions in french, they have to relevance, each menu button goes to one layout.

Thanks again

Sorry, I can't tell you how to properly relate your records (which I believe will solve your issue) until I understand what the relations are between contacts and the rest of your layouts.

You really should take a look at that video I suggested earlier and read this paper on Relational Theory published by FileMaker, Inc. Perhaps it will help you see why I'm asking my questions.

Good luck, I've gotta get back to doing what pays the bills!

.. well not exactly... if the skill level was higher... the response would likely be in less depth with maybe more technical terms and without having to explain basics...

Lee's right when he says "There isn't a guideline for the Self Evaluated Skill Levels." It's all relative to the belief of the individual. Besides, it's usually pretty easy to find out in pretty short order what skill level an individual has...according to our individual perspectives, that is. :

Hello

JUst wanted to thank you for the help. Really appreciate it. Thanks to your help I solved my problems pretty quickly in fact.

Sorry forsaying I was intermediate when everyone says I amabeginner. I have alot of experience in databasesbut my boss is pretty picky in what she wants

thanks again

BINGO,

This is exactly the reason I was critical of aflgenx for tell you to change your level. You do not need to adjust it.

Your welcome!

Glad to hear you figured out a solution. Don't hesitate to ask more questions as they come up.
