Ugo DI LUCA Posted February 1, 2006 Posted February 1, 2006 Hi all, I wouln't know how to post this but as it is when printing that this reveals... When attempting to print any document from FileMaker 8, the filename in the printer spooler and the default name for any printed pdf is set to the *first* name the file was given on creation. Any idea how to change this and/or where this filename is stored ? You all take care. I will be back soon :
dkemme Posted February 1, 2006 Posted February 1, 2006 This can be controlled with variables, some examples are in the documentation for naming PDF's. Never tried to name a print spool job though...
comment Posted February 1, 2006 Posted February 1, 2006 Hi Ugo, The file name is stored in the file (where else). If you open the file with a text editor, you can find it. Unfortunately, if you try to change it, you will no longer be able to open the file - it will ask for your password, then refuse to accept it.
Ugo DI LUCA Posted February 1, 2006 Author Posted February 1, 2006 Hi Doug, Hi Michael, This upsets me. Well I know how to use variables, so yes the pdf side can be handled. I just mentionned it so that you could easily reproduce it. But this happen whenever you print any report too. I can't remember if this happened with 7. My client just notified he didn't understood why his comptetitor (to whom I sold the same business package first ) appeared in his print job list ! It turns out to me as a bug, what else can it be. This doesn't happen on Windows.
comment Posted February 1, 2006 Posted February 1, 2006 It's the same in v.7. It is a bug - I wonder if anyone has reported it. Sounds like an unpleasant situation for you - but you can tell your client that his competitor paid for the development, that's why he's getting it so cheaply...
Reed Posted February 1, 2006 Posted February 1, 2006 I guess we'll just have to start naming all our files "print_job.fp7" when we create them, then changing the name afterwards...
Ugo DI LUCA Posted February 1, 2006 Author Posted February 1, 2006 Hi Dana, Yes, that's what I had in mind actually for the next ones. But if only this bug was solved, it would be better to have the Layout name rather than the filename, don't you think ?
comment Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 I believe that Apple dictates a fileName location that OS X can read when you select Save As PDF... After all, it is done by the OS, not Filemaker. The bug seems to be not updating the register when the file is renamed. I don't know if it's reasonable to expect it to update dynamically every time you want to print.
Ender Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 But if only this bug was solved, it would be better to have the Layout name rather than the filename, don't you think ? Ooh, how about an optional calc on the Print[] step to define a name with a calc?! You could then use something from the record or use a custom name. Or is this too much?
HazMatt Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 Ooh, how about an optional calc on the Print[] step to define a name with a calc?! You could then use something from the record or use a custom name. Or is this too much? No way - that would be great! The way FileMaker keeps making things customizable using the calculation interface, this would be right in line with being able to customize every little part of a solution. I was able to reproduce the problem described using FileMaker 7. After changing the original file name in a text editor to something else, saving it, and trying to open in FM, I get this message: The access privileges in this file have been damaged or possibly tampered with. Please contact FileMaker Technical Support of the problem cannot be resolved.
