I'm currently running FMS 5.5 under OS 9 on G4/450 with 1000base ethernet - I know it's ancient but it does the job religiously and is totally rock solid, and serves out 60 dbs to 30 users running OS9/OSX/XP/98

Want to go to FMS 5.5 under OS X 10.3.9 on the same G4 (maybe add some RAM).

Anyone got comments on performance expectations?

I'm not prepared to upgrade the hardware at the moment except the RAM.

I ran FMS 5.5 on a G3 266 with 10.2.8 for quite a while with good performance. Never used OS 9 with FMS, but I've heard that performance is actually better with OS X in some cases.

OS X on the same hardware will likely be a bit slower. But it is more stable. I don't know how stable your OS 9 server is, but I used to have to restart it every couple weeks. With OS X as the OS, I had to restart maybe every few months.

I doubt you would notice an improvement in performance and why change a setup that is working well!!!

Thanks people

Ultimately I will have to switch to OS X (ain't gunna use Windoze, not no way, not ho how) when I get the systems up into FMP7+ so it was a way of easing into it.

You (all) may be interested to know that I originally had a G3/450 then put the G4/450 in to replace. In nearly 6 years of FMS5+ neither of the machines ever crashed - unless I had done something stupid. Recovers everytime from power outs etc.

Totally rock solid!
