Totalling a time field based on value list

Featured Replies

What I have is a value list that I use to categorize records. Each of these records also has a length of time in minutes:seconds associated with it.

What I'd like to do is to have the DB add up the total of the times for all the records in each category.

ie; Category A = 03:02

Category B = 01:22

and so on...

I know this should be easy, but my brain is stuck at the moment.

Thanks in advance for your help.

1. Make a summary field that is the total of your time field

2. Make a layout with a sub-summary part when sorted by your category field

3. Put the category and summary fields on the part

4. Switch to preview mode and sort by category

5. ...

6. Profit!

The only trouble with that method is that I'd like to be able to see these numbers as I work. Having them on a layout for printing is cool, but I'd like to find a method that will let me see them in browse mode as I enter and change data.

Any thoughts?

Attached is the file I'm trying to work with. The categories (value list) selection is on the left that says "Score", "Source" etc... What I'm trying to get it to do is give me a total time based on the durations of the cues set to "Score". You can see I don't have it working by the "?" in the box under total time at the top right of the page.

Any help is appreciated

Raz suggested the problem may be a format issue. I verified the fields were set to "time" yet the problem persists. Any thoughts?

It is a format issue, but not with the time fields.

First, you had the TotalScore field set to retun "score" as time (should be text).

Then you displayed the wrong field on the layout, it should be the totalScoreLeft field, which has the sum calc, not TotalScore, which retuns 'Score'.

So I switched the "totalScore" field to result in text. That now shows "SCORE" as you said it would. However, I have both fields (totalScore & totalscoreleft) displayed on the layouts, but the total score left field is blank.

Thank you for your patience.

OK, got it at last!!

What I had wrong was my TO relationship was setup backwards. I needed to change it to go from "CueUsage" to "TotalScore".
