mwa Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 Hi Guys I have a relational DB that uses a left hand colum of navigation as well as the header. I need to create a list view for companies using about 5 fields but obviously cannot use the standard list layout as it runs edge to edge. I have tried using a portal but no matter what I do I can only get the details from one record to show on the first line of the portal. i.e. not all 200 records. Can anyone help
Fitch Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 If you want a portal to show all records, use a cartesian relationship (i.e. the "X") between two fields you know will always contain data.
mwa Posted August 9, 2006 Author Posted August 9, 2006 Fitch Thanks for the reply but its fallen on the ears of a graphics guy, not a developer so I'm no nearer undertanding what the answer is. I've changed the table relationship to an x rather than = but no change. Wacked you an Email off with a couple of screen grabs but it bounced back. Cheers anyway.
mwa Posted August 10, 2006 Author Posted August 10, 2006 I probably havenât explained accurately so hereâs the whole deal: Layout âContactsâ (see attached pic) contains three specific Browse fields that need to show as list column headings in another Layout called Test_Background (see attached pic). The 3 x fields are Company, Relationship, Business Type 1. Layout Test_Background has a Portal with the 3 x fields. In my database are 2 x tables, Contacts (containing 230 records) and Contacts_List (containing 0 records). Contacts relates to Contacts_List through the common field âCompanyâ. The Portal is set to show records from Contacts_List but this has no records. The 3 x fields are set to the Contacts_List Table. So, how do I get the field data from the Contacts Layout on to the Test_Background layout to show up as list rather than a set of individual records. I have tried changing the relationship between the Contacts and Contacts_List tables from â=â to âxâ but no joy.
Fitch Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 Is the upper left corner of the field completely inside the portal?
mwa Posted August 10, 2006 Author Posted August 10, 2006 Yes it is. Interestingly I managed to get the first row to show a company name yesterday, then deleted the whole lot and started again. Now I cannot get anything to show in the first row of the Portal.
mwa Posted August 10, 2006 Author Posted August 10, 2006 Hi Guys I need a response on this tonight otherwise my smug gloatining PHP programmers are going to have a field day in the morning by creating this in a MYSQL DB in the first hour of the working day. i'm keen to defend FM for non-expert jocks like me but does the program have pretty fundamental limitations?
Ender Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 Your portal fields appear to be on the second row. They should reside entirely within the first row (the white row).
mwa Posted August 10, 2006 Author Posted August 10, 2006 Moved the fields but still no records showing in the portal
LaRetta Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 Again, move it away from the left edge of the portal. That is a danger zone. It's too far left. Just to be sure, make your fields smaller and move them away from the top edge (but stay in the first row) and move them away from the left edge.
LaRetta Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 (edited) "but does the program have pretty fundamental limitations?" Bite your tongue ... FM is wonderful but, like all programs xor languages, it must be learned. Try picking up Access and creating ANYTHING in less than two weeks! I've come from Access and Paradox worlds (and others). FM is TOP. :wink2: Edited August 10, 2006 by Guest
