badapple Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 We have a fairly complex system. Screen redraw on a mac osx 10.4.7 works fine, but when using it on a windows xp home machine, it takes forever the screen to redraw. If you are clicked in a field on one record and try to go to another record while still clicked into that field, the screen takes forever to redraw in windows. We just upgraded from v6 to v8.5. never had any problems in v6. Have been using the system for about 10yrs now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave
Søren Dyhr Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 First thing to check is that your file-references are very likely to be cluttered up. Next is that, a lot of measures to tunnel values over relations via unstored calc's us needless now ...and finally should you turn the most spreadsheet'ish behaviours, into a more transactions dito ...have you solution a fair share of shown summaryfields utilized otherwise than in summary reports?? How many or few globals do you think, is the absolute minimum your solution can run on?? Have you scrutinized the migrationfoundation whitepapers?? --sd
badapple Posted October 16, 2006 Author Posted October 16, 2006 Also started a simple system in verison 8.5. still having the same issues. There are probably 75 fields on the form. no summary fields or calc fields. Still having the same problem when going between records.
Søren Dyhr Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 Allright, snassy graphics or containerfield??? In layouts does it really pay off to keep everything done with vectorized graphics produced with the availiable tool to the left of the layouting window. --sd
badapple Posted October 19, 2006 Author Posted October 19, 2006 i just created a single layout with no relationships. it has 75 text and 2 date fields on it. I created 3 records and put data in two of the text fields on each of them. If I click into any of the fields and go from record to record, it takes a couple of seconds for the full layout to pull up on each record. There are no borders around any of the fields. We have a code for filemaker support, but they keep saying there is nothing wrong with it. If 8.5 is suppose to be faster than 6, why are we having this problem. Thanks, Dave
RPCia Posted October 19, 2006 Posted October 19, 2006 I am getting similar complaints from my departments, also when entering find mode it takes a while to redraw the layouts. Also when typing in a field the, the field can not keep up with the person typing. They are by no means a speed typer.
badapple Posted October 19, 2006 Author Posted October 19, 2006 We have called tech support several times about this issue. They have no ideas for help or anything. They keep trying to say that the computer is to slow. It is a Pentium 4 3ghz w/ 1gig of ram. nothing else is open, I have even shutoff all startup items to see if that was causing a problem and same results. If anyone out there has any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave
Søren Dyhr Posted October 19, 2006 Posted October 19, 2006 If 8.5 is suppose to be faster than 6, why are we having this problem. If you whip up a layout with 75 fields might some kind of normalization of your data take place anyway, I wonder if you stuff data in say this: http://www.filemakerpros.com/CALBASIC.zip You still expiriences this kind of rendering? --sd
RPCia Posted October 20, 2006 Posted October 20, 2006 I know in my situation data normalization would probably help however, at this time its not an option. the 10 main files have over 1500 field each, and there are around 100 supporting files that were all created in v6. On top of that they were designed by someone with little to no database experience. So they are by no means even in 1nf. Unfortunately time is not on my side. I just don't understand why in v6 we could jump from record to record seemlessly and in v8.5 it has to take 30 seconds to redraw.
RPCia Posted October 20, 2006 Posted October 20, 2006 (edited) Try this and see if it helps, I know it definately helps us. when your browsing through records pay close attention to where the cursor is. If the cursor is in a field and I try to go from one record to the next then it takes 3 to 5 times as long to pull up the next record. If I click whitespace then the next record will pull up very quickly. SORRY I just reread your original post, and this is what you were trying to find an answer for. I was just so excited that I could give my employees a short term fix for the delay I assumed you were having the same problems. Edited October 20, 2006 by Guest Didn't check original question
badapple Posted October 20, 2006 Author Posted October 20, 2006 I pulled that file up and when i go to the layout with multiple records, it does do the same thing. The speed is much faster since there is only 3 fields on it, but it does take some time to pull up the records. I don't have a way to put this sample file on the web except to email at this time.
