November 18, 200619 yr I have a trouble to establish any relationship in Filemaker Pro 8.5. I think that I have done everything right. I have checked allow or delete tables via relationship. But the program deny to establish any relatioship in any files. I reinstalled the program but the problem still remains. Pascal
November 18, 200619 yr edudna I am afraid that there is not enough detail to go on there. If you can attach a zipped copy of your file and a brief explanation of what you are trying to achieve I am sure someone will then step in and advise you Phil
November 18, 200619 yr Author In my database I have four tables, student records, class, enrollment and attendance. Simply I am trying to connect class Id student Id, enrollment Id in four tables, name and surname of the student. Although I can see the relationships and I have checked the appropriate checkboxes for delete or create via this relationship nothing can change in one table if I put some data to the other. I hope you can understand because the file is in the greek langauge.
November 18, 200619 yr But what are expecting to change? What EXACTLY are you trying to do? Phil Edited November 18, 200619 yr by Guest
November 18, 200619 yr Author Let suppose that we have an enrollment table and a student record table, when I create a record in students record table I am waiting to see that also a record created in in the enrollment table. name::name surname::surname studentId::studentId Pascal
November 18, 200619 yr OK Pascal That isn't how it works. How would Filemaker know how many related records you want to create? You must still create the record in the related table. Here is how you do it. In the file where you are creating the students record, create a layout and set it to show records from the relationship that you have set up to the enrollment table. If you now go to that layout and create a new record the record will be created in the enrollment table. HTH Phil Edited November 18, 200619 yr by Guest
November 18, 200619 yr Author See the attachment to understand it better because layout does not help me a lot. I am expecting in the file that student id, name and surname from student records table appears in the second table that I have to put the grades of the students without put again their names and Ids. November 18, 200619 yr I am sorry pascal I was in a right state this morning when I answered your post and I answered incorrectly. I will put together a small file to demontrate for you how to create your new child records. Once again my apologies Phil
November 18, 200619 yr OK Pascal I have calmed down now and I have your sample file for you You will see that there are two records in the main file. One for me and one for you. In that main file (the pink layout) you can add courses to the layout and as you do, a new blank entry is created so that you might add more courses. If you now look at the other layout(the green one) you will now be in the enrollment table where you will see the detail that you want. The only thing different about what you said and what I have done is that i have not stored the name in the enrollment table only the id. The other details are pulled via the relationship. This method of new record creation uses what is known as a portal. There are other ways but this should get you going - I hope Once again sorry for the bad advice this morning - it really was one of those days!
