OK folks, here's a really tricky one.

I've got a web-based system that's been running nicely for just on 12 months. Users are added to a database and through some CDML magic (just the [FMP-Record] tag) their records appear as MailBcc tags in a format file's form, so that a submitted message makes a -New record in a database and all subscribers get an announcement e-mailed message. The host is a WinTel box, NT4 running FMP 4.0v3 with whatever the latest WC version is.

It's been running sweetly until recently when the sysadmin installed Mcaffee VirusShield (without asking or advising me, the @#$% swine) and it now generates dozens of Dr watson errors -- but I don't think that the VShield problem is related.

The Web Companion activity log is showing WC is getting errors fom the mail server (Error -101 which is not in my documentation <mock surprise>).

A quick check of the submitted string shows that the 49th Bcc address is being truncated (after 1,977 bytes) and the rest of the submission including the action tag is not getting through.

What I'd like to know:

* has anybody else encountered this problem with FMP 4.0v3?

* are later versions of FMP better in this regard?

* do I have a problem of some sort?

* any other ideas?

Thanks well in advance!

Sorry, Kieth - the error (101) message is not a FileMaker error code.

Vaughan,

If you are using Microsoft Exchange or Outlook mail server, the error is coming from the mail server or the server's firewall. As far as I can figure out, it has something to do with the origin of the message has been altered or cannot be confirmed, or the message format is not consistent, and a security concern.

Sorry:

-1 Unknown error

0 No error

1 User canceled action

2 Memory error

3 Command is unavailable (for example, wrong operating system, wrong mode, etc.)

4 Command is unknown

5 Command is invalid (for example, a Set Field script step does not have a calculation specified)

100 File is missing

101 Record is missing

Folks

Thanks for your collective brain-time. <grin>

My interpretation is the error code is *minus* 101. It's either a Web Companion error or a mail server error.

No Microsoft mail servers in this organisation: it's Netscape as far as I know.

My conclusion so far is to firstly get rid of Macaffee VirusShield and see if the situation improves. If not I'll quickly convert the databases to FMP 5.5 and test it on Unlimited on another machine to see if the problem remains.

OK, I just has VirusShield removed from the NT4.6 server. Basic testing indicates that there is no change: the string is still too long.

Next step is to convert the files to FMP 5.5 and test on there.

I'll let you know.
