cmack Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 My 8th grade students have elections for the school superlatives. They vote on most popular, most academic etc. I have already created the database that we will use for the voting. What I need is a what to tabulate the votes. I am not sure how to go about it. We have 15 categories and they will select a boy and girl for each of the categories. I would like to be able to see who won each category but I don't exactly what the script or calculation would be. If I could view the number of votes each student got for each category that would be even better but what I really have to have is the winner. Is there any easy way to do this? Hopefully I made it clear enough I tend to ramble. FM 8.5 Adv on Mac X.4 Thanks for any assistance, cmack
mr_vodka Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Hi Cmack, You can achieve this by creating a subsummary report grouped by category and then further grouped by gender. There are a lot of posts on here regarding subsummary reports, that you will find when doing a search. Also, you can use the wizard within FileMaker. If you are still having issues, then come back with where you are having problems and we can try and further help you.
cmack Posted March 13, 2007 Author Posted March 13, 2007 OK thanks Mr. Vodka. I was trying to make it way more complicated. I never even thought of a subsummary report. *smacks head* I know how to do it based on one sort such as category but I am going to give it a shot to break it down by gender. thanks so much!
cmack Posted March 13, 2007 Author Posted March 13, 2007 Ok maybe I did not set up my database to do it as a summary. I can't seem to figure out how to set it up. I have my fields: Most Popular Girl Most Popular Boy Most Academic Girl Most Academic Boy Most Athletic Girl Most Athletic Boy and so on. There are 5 girls in a value list for each of the girl categories and then the same for the boys. I am not sure what to sort on for the subsummary. I did a search for subsummary but so much comes up and the ones I read did not seem to clear it up for me. I guess I need a bit more help.
mr_vodka Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I think that you should structure your solution to something like this. superlative.zip
cmack Posted March 14, 2007 Author Posted March 14, 2007 Thank you Mr. Vodka. I see how you did this and tabulating it is actually easier. The only way I could do it with the way I have mine set up was to make 30 different summary layouts or 30 different calculations. Neither of which appealed to me. I will have to re-work my solution but in the end your will work much better. I still have so much to learn. Thank you very much for your help. cmack
