FileMaker MySql Webinar

Featured Replies

For those of you who are unaware, FileMaker will soon be able to connect to MySQL as a data source, to some extent anyway, they are putting on a short tech webinar to introduce it and provide a short demo on June 12:

https://filemakerevents.webex.com/filemakerevents/onstage/g.php?d=578492386&t=a

FileMaker is more than database software, it is a rapid-application development environment anyone can use to quickly create solutions for collecting, managing and reporting on data. With planned connection between FileMaker and MySQL, you will be able to combine the all-in-one ease of FileMaker database solutions with the open source strengths of MySQL.

In this webinar, you will understand how developers can benefit from connecting FileMaker solutions and MySQL, and you will see a technology demo of FileMaker connecting with MySQL. You will learn how to be among the first to receive free trial code when available.

Thanks Genx,

I've enrolled on it as well, and can't wait till Tuesday. This COULD be very exciting time for FM developers...

COULD, indeed hehe, here's for hoping eh?

For those of you who do watch this, could you come back and drop a few lines on your opinions. I want to watch it live, but won't be able to for around a week yet until I find the time.

Cheers.

Hi Genx,

Thought I'd give you my opinion on the webinar. It WAS a direct link into the MySQL data source, although you can use the same techniques for MS SQL Server, Oracle.

Data in the SQL tables can be Read/Write or set as Readonly - all through FileMaker accounts.

The recording is going to be published online tomorrow under www.filemaker.com/mysql

As usual with Filemaker products, don't know when the release of this new code will be.....

Hi Jalz,

Thanks :

Hi Alex,

What I found terribly exciting is that connected SQL tables can be dropped in the relationships graph. Relationships can be created between any SQL tables and FM tables as you wish. Calculations can then be created in FM based upon those external fields [color:blue]WITHOUT pulling in the SQL data as we do now!

No more having to write SQL - FM will automatically generate it in the background ... it still blows my mind! :laugh2:

No --- seriously, that's awesome, if it works as cool as it sounds -- we now have a rapid dev environment with a decent database backend -- and data that won't corrupt!!

I just hope it doesn't screw up all the write ahead logging and everything else that SQL is great for, i.e. so if you put a transaction through, it either goes through or doesn't

Anyway, lol off I go to exam :

I should mention for those that might be concerned ... it uses optimistic record locking instead of pessimistic (as FM currently uses). This is good news as well. And yes, it works just as I've described - it is terribly easy to work with!

Furthermore, it leaves the external DB structure intact. It uses the native DB indices; not the FM index.

it's kind of a bummer that you can't use SQL data to make value lists... that will kind of limit it's use in some situations, like data entry.

I was thinking the same thing. I guess it would depend on whether or not the calc would "store" a related external DB field.

I just realized that I should probably stop talking about this since I'm basing the previous comment on information other than the info from the publicly available webinar...

Is there any way to get audio on the webex recordings?

As Jalz pointed out above, it's now available. Here's the direct link .

Yeah I know, but no audio :o ... Or I'm not getting any anyway.

Go to webex.com and download a WebEx player.

UPDATE: If no sound, the setting might be set to mute. Otherwise it should work.

Already had it, but updated anyway.

Lol, you think I wouldn't check that :o

Have you tried it by any chance? (If you have i know it's just my computer).

Thanks

Yep, I tried it (before I responded prior). I get sound and video just fine. :o

PS - I would never think you weren't smart enough to check something. But, as a tech, I've found that it's when I DON'T ask those simple questions, then that's exactly when I should have.

... okay apparently it didn't like my headphones? Speakers work :o

Thanks.

You know what I think is cool... besides the general idea - You only need the ODBC driver on the server :o

According to the public webinar, the "supplimental" fields based on SQL tables will be unstored. Only certain flavors of the SQL world can be sampled. Bummer as I really need to connect with PostgreSQL.

Poor guy had the "new code" crap out twice, yeah, you know, it's still in the lab...then he messed up and showed us the relaunch...like it is some big mystery what the new code is. Nevertheless FM Inc. ought to take a page from Apple and hype the upcoming release rather than try to keep the thing secret. And I have no NDA. That was all public stuff.

Bugs have been public for many years now, and they don't seem to make it a big deal... :o

Anyone knows if this will work with the standalone applications created with FMAdvanced? That would be AWESOME!

  • Author

From what they stated in the webinar, yes it will, though no indication was given when any of it will be available.
