Hi,

I need to set the IWP default port in Filemaker 8 Pro for web publishing, however it does not allow me to use port 80 as it is being used. I then insert 591 for the port and it still does not allow this port? I have forwarded this port (591) to my router directing it to the necessary IP address but still no luck.

Does it matter that I have another rule on my router forwarding this port to a different pc with filemaker on the network? I wouldn't think so.

I'm all ears for a solution.

Thanks

Shaun

Yes, yes it matters. This is the whole point of ports, to make sure that traffic goes to one correct location.. hows your router going to decide which pc to exchange traffic with?

I have specified a service which is to allow traffic via port 591. I have then created 2 separate rules using this 591 service. One for IP: 192.168..... and one for IP: 192.167.... as an example.

My router is opening ports for 2 separate pc IP's. I haven't got a single rule which opens this port for our entire network IP range.

Okay i think you're misunderstanding the concept here.

Let's say someone queries your external ip: 203.151.155.155 on port 80. Now if you have two web server's set up on two of your servers and you have two rules forwarding traffic on port 80 to both server's and both those server's have default sites, what do you think is going to happen?

Ports exist to uniquely identify computers within a network accessible via only one IP address - NAT, PAT, NAPT etc - all refer to the translation of a port and an address back to the original lan address - read some wiki articles if you don't believe me, I'm sure there will be plenty.

I'm surprised your router even lets you do this.

Point is, if you forward port 591 to pc with the ip 192.168.522.144 then what happens is when a query is made to: 203.15.15.15:591 - your router will internally translate this to 192.168.522.144 - hence why it has to be unique... your router can't translate the address twice and forward the traffic twice.

Thanks for explaining that to me I have a much better understanding of how the forwarding works.

I realise my mistake now.

I have another question: In the pdf document on how to set up IWP to run on FM 8 Server Advanced, it states that you must "Move the contents of the web folder to the root folder of the web server software."

What do they mean by "web folder?"

Are we correct that "root folder" of the web server software is C:inetpubwwwroot?

Yes

In the pdf document on how to set up IWP to run on FM 8 Server Advanced

You know, I have no clue...

I've only set up FMSA 8 a couple of times as it's normally already running by the time i get there.. but if i had to guess i'd say somewhere in C:Program FilesFileMakerFileMaker ServerWeb Publishing.

Sorry ;)
