Advise on client, and how to send mail

Featured Replies

I am creating a basic solution that will be hosted on an external service. I need the database to send mail based on a field status. Can I do this? The server is FSA, and I do not have FM advanced. Do I need a copy of advanced to set this up?

Thank you!

Sending mail via FileMaker is quite simple. The Send Mail [] script step will send an email via your default mail application, and can have the destination address scripted, along with a number of other options. You do not need Advanced to program this, and it will work fine on a system hosted with FMSA.

You state that you want to send a mail 'based on field status.' I'm not sure what you mean by this. You may be talking about triggering a script based on the value in a given field, or something else, so I think you'll have to clarify that.

Thank you stanley. I apologize as I was not clear. The filemaker database is on an external hosting site. And, you are correct that I am looking to basically have the server send an email to a team when a certain field is set to a particular state. Such as, if the manager marks a field as approved, the server would notify the right team members. The hosting group stated to just set the SMTP to the server. I am not exactly sure how that is done. When I do the send script, it is looking to email from my own email application. Thank you very much for the help.

FileMaker's built-in mailing will send via the client's default mail application. To force it to use an alternate, or to work without an email application altogether, look into using a plug-in such as SMTPit (http://www.smtpit.com/), in which case you can script the whole emailing process via any account.
