FMS 9 and Directory Services Configuration

Featured Replies

Has anyone tinkered with the feature in FM9 to configure directory services? If so, what are the potential benefits of this feature? I am more than sure Steven will chime in at one point. :

ROFLOL. I should have skipped this one.

The Directory Services feature is meant to list the Server and information about it for user information and assistance. This has been somewhat enhanced in FileMaker® Server 9.

[color:red]Contrary to apparently widespread popular belief and despite the efforts of several DEVCON speakers to demonstrate otherwise, this feature has nothing at all to do with External Server Authentication.

Directory Services is sort of a yellow pages listing.

Thanks Steven. I am glad that you did not skip this one. lol. :

So with LDAP, am I assuming that I can retrieve user info now? Currently, I am executing a small VB Script to pull the user's email address, telephone, title, etc into fields from AD. Does this mean that this would no longer be needed and I can do it via server?

No it doesn't. The LDAP feature is to register FileMaker Server with the LDAP Direcory only. It is to publish information about the Server to the networks so users can find the server.

Ah ok. So its more to register the FM Server with the existing AD directory services so that the FMS can be found more easily. Gotcha. Thanks for clearing things up.
