Can I somehow emulate in filemaker the tooltips that popup when the mouse pointer hovers over a button or a field?

Or am I better off using a common tip area and set a calculation to change the text dynamically? Or is this even possible?

Using Filemaker advanced, yes.

In layout mode select the button/field/object and choose :

Format > Tool Tip
