September 27, 200718 yr Is there anybody who knows where I could find the information as to what all the operators in the ‘Define Fields’ and ‘text, number etc functions' all do? Is there a manual somewhere on line or to download? If so I need it for FMP 6 Thanks Edited September 27, 200718 yr by Guest
September 27, 200718 yr The Online Help does a pretty good of explaining the basic of what they do. Open it with FileMaker open, and search for [color:blue] Functions and then pick the class of Functions. I moved your topic here because this were the fellow members have made recommendations for books and resources. I would start with books like Special Edition Using FileMaker 5 - 8, since you are using 6, you can probably find v5 on ebay or Amazon. There isn't any books yet on v9 that I'm aware of, but the ones for 8 cover most of the functions in 9. HTH Lee Edited September 27, 200718 yr by Guest didn't notice version
September 30, 200718 yr Author Lee one of the problems I have is that my help function for FMP does not work. I get a blank screen. So I suppose a file is missing somewhere. would you know what file and where it should be? thanks
September 30, 200718 yr I just check to see if I could find it, and apparently system 10 puts in into resources of something, as it no longer is in the FileMaker Folder. If you open the Online System Help, you can look under the Home, and there is a list of help, it appear there without a number after it. HTH Lee
September 30, 200718 yr Author I did that, that opens a file in the browser that is on my disk in the FM folder. I see no home function.
September 30, 200718 yr The Online Help is part of the Operating System, and you can access it in almost every program, including the finder window. Once it is openned, you can click on the house, give it a minute to search the system, and then a list will come down. In it, should be the FileMaker Help as I said before. I sent you a Private topic on this. Lee
October 1, 200718 yr Author Nifty tool (Jing) Lee just downloaded it. Thanks, makes it clear what you mean. But back to the topic at hand. I did not know you could LH click the home button though, and something might be astray as I do get some help files showing from some programs, but some that I know are there do not show. And no FMP files.
October 1, 200718 yr And FileMaker wasn't amoug them? When you are in these other programs, are you able to open Help in them? Are you having any problems with this HD? You might want to use Disk Doctor and see if the Disk needs repairs. Lee
October 1, 200718 yr Author correct no FM, and all others open. No disk problems and I did happen to do a repair last week (regular maintenance) Do you know where these files should be stored under OSX4? might be good to check this first. PS are you up early or late going to bed? must be 2 am in your part of the world?
October 1, 200718 yr Up late, and now up early. No, I don't know where they put them now. All I could get out of the Installer Log, was that the Help files were put Resources. The installer log is in the Folder for FileMaker, if you have one, take a look at it and you will see what I mean. If you don't have the Help installed, maybe you can uninstall and reinstall FileMaker. Lee Edited October 1, 200718 yr by Guest
October 1, 200718 yr Author Lee in that case good morning. I got it and it works, not sure why but this is what I did. As I too had been unable to find anything in the log I had this idea today that it might be in the programme. So right hand clicked it and did a ‘Show Package Content’ than Contents/ Resources/ FileMaker Help - Bingo! Now it still did not work from within the help programme but at least I knew it to be there. Next I lounged ‘00-Reg+CRite’ in the file ‘FileMaker Help’ this opened in the normal help window. And miracle it now shows in the Help window and is available from the programme. Not sure why, but I assume somehow the help function now knows the path or something. Thanks for your help Lee; somehow your suggestions made me look in different places. Have a nice day and look after yourself.
October 3, 200718 yr Author Morning Lee, well there you go, after a restart it is all back to square one, no help available. any ideas as to how to permanently fix this? or what causes this? or anybody for that matter?
