tomp Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 I will be having an installation in a non-US (non-$) country. Is there any way to set the currency symbol for a given runtime solution? Is there a value list of currency symbols in RM to choose from? I see that in formatting a number you can specify the currency symbol, but short of finding all the currency fields on all the layouts and changing them one by one for this one (for now) application, I don't know how to change that. And I'm not sure the standard character set would have a lot of the symbols. And then I would be managing two source versions for any updates. Not a pretty picture. TIA
comment Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 I don't think you have many options here. The default currency symbol in Format > Number... is set in stone when the file is first created (even cloning the file will not change it). You can change it manually for each individual field, but it cannot be calculated (maybe in the next version of conditional formatting?). You could format your fields yourself by using an auto-entered calculation - but then the fields would have to be Text, and that would create a lot of problems when using them in calculations and for sorting. Another option would be to create a display-only field (a calculation with Text result) for each currency field, and overlay the real (enterable) number field with its display counterpart.
tomp Posted November 9, 2007 Author Posted November 9, 2007 Bummer. I was afraid of that. It doesn't seem that it would be that difficult for FM to have a system preference for a currency and it's associated symbol (that would have to be 'settable' for runtime applications). The System Preference/Personal/International options for a MAC allows the user to choose a currency. That model could be used. I find it hard to believe that I'm the first user to encounter this issue. What do others do who have applications deployed where different currencies are used?
comment Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 The system preference IS used - when the file is created. The truth is I am surprised that cloning a file, or setting it to use the current system formats, doesn't apply the current system preference as it does for other formats, e.g. date. In fact, I would go as far as calling it a bug.
