Filemaker advanced ?

Featured Replies

FIlemaker is so easy to use, but I have some questions...

I would like to get rid of the left hand column on a database, will I need Filemaker advanced for that ?.

Will users need FM advanced or not if I have to get it to enable me to get rid of the Left hand column :)

Also.

If I have an office of 25 people and only 5- 10 are around at any one time, what is the best licensing solution ?

Site Licence of say 10 licences and then install on all machines as only 2 to 3 of the people will ever be using it at one time or what ??

So simply we have lots of users but most will NOT be even in the office most of the time...

To you first question:

Has your company bought computers for all 25 people (even though on 10 are around at a time)?

It has bought computers for 35 people about 30 in design but only a few are actually "At Base" at any one time and they will be using the database so when people come with a laptop into the office they will then connect to the database sometimes.

You should really talk to a Filemaker Volume Sales Rep, they can give better answers, but you might be able set up 2-3 FM "workstations" or depending on your solution, use IWP.

I did talk to filemaker and they did not seem to know which would be the best option.... I mean they actually did not know so I got stumped there...

I'm not postive about the terms of the Volume License Agreement, but I'm pretty sure one copy of Filemaker is tied to one machine. That fact and the cost of each license under the VLA or under the non-volume licenses is what FMI can give you.

How that factors into your company's workflow and budget is something only you can answer.

That is what I feared, I had thought it would sniff out the network and "See" how many licences were "ON" like adobe does.. maybe it does in which case 10 licences would be OK. BUt they themselves told me that a single licence maybe installed on two seperate machines so 10 licences will serve 20 machines.... :)

Decisions....

It does not really sniff in the sense you are thinking. For instance if you buy one copy and install it on 2 machines it will only allow one macine at a time to open a file on a network. If you have a 10 user licence installed on 15 machines it will not allow more than 10 machines to use Filemaker on that network.

Well that is great I can buy a 10 user volume licence, install on 25 machines and since only 10 will ever use it at any one time that will be fine...

Not quite sure what the difference between "Site" & "Volume" licensing is ??

See here. Site has a 50 seat minimum and covers a whole "Site", where as volume is a set amount of seats.

So if we have a volume licence for say 10 users we could install on say 25 machines as long as only 10 were used at any one time ??

Why don't you e-mail your regional Volume Licensing Rep (if FMI's still doing it that way) and ask if what you're proposing is within the terms of the licensing agreement?
