Hi I'm very new to Filemaker. I currently work for a non-profit and the person who created out current Filemaker DB has unexpectedly left. We cannot afford to hire someone with knowledge so it's been passed to me b.c I use it the most. To say I know little is probably an understatement however I am willing to learn so is there anything out there that I can start with to get a basic starting point? I appreciate any feedback and sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

Hi- I was in the same situation a few months ago. I recommend checking out a filemaker book from the library. I particularly liked "Filemaker pro 8: The missing Manual"

Missing Manual is good to start with. Keep in mind that the FM help built in is really good too. I'm more of the dive in and figure it out type though. If you get stuck trying to do something, there is always these boards :)

Hi Kain1111, and welcome to the Forum.

Are you looking forward to this new part of your job, or wish that you didn't have to do it.

It is important to know where you stand on this self-development before we get too far into it.

Lets start by finding out the current status of things.

What does the current database do?

What, if any changes are being planned to the existing database?

Are there new database needs being planned on (i.e. the current one does names and addresses, now they would like to track trade show activities, or donations, etc.)

Has anyone researched out the existing "Off-the-shelf" solutions available for Non-Profit businesses?

HTH

Hi Kain,

I read Lynda tutorial. Here is the website: http://movielibrary.lynda.com/html/modPage.asp?ID=96

Sometimes, I like to learn with samples or videos. It depends on people's methods of learning. Maybe, if you like to read from books, then you can purchase FileMaker books. For me, I like to learn by looking at videos or people's samples of coding.

Hope it helps...
