Newbies alopez Posted March 12, 2008 Newbies Posted March 12, 2008 First post in this forum so I hope I am posting in the correct place for this question. I am a first time user of FMP with experience in MS Access and a beginner in SQL. I am now a mac user and was told by mac that FMP is the best software for building a database and sharing it with windows and Mac users. I have no problem building the DB but I have no clue how to get this on the web and available to share with a few users. I do have a few websites and can publish it to a place on there. I just cannot seem to figure out if I jsut publish the FM file and that's it or if there is a list of things I need to do for people to be able to access this from the internet. Thank you for your help.
mr_vodka Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 You are going to want to get FileMaker Server or FileMaker Server Advanced. The Advanced version gives you the ability to use IWP (Instant Web Publishing). However, IMO you should just use FileMaker Server. You are very limited with IWP, and if you have any experience with Web Development and PHP then you should have no problem building out the webpages the way you want it to be.
Newbies alopez Posted March 12, 2008 Author Newbies Posted March 12, 2008 (edited) Ok thanks so much. Is there a certain file that I need to publish from File Maker or is there a few files I need to publish? Edited March 12, 2008 by Guest
John May - Point In Space Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 You may also want to consider a FileMaker hosting service like ours: http://www.pointinspace.com/ If you go said route, you do not need to purchase FileMaker Server (Advanced) or server hardware yourself, and all updates, monitoring, maintenance, etc. are taken off your hands. - John
mr_vodka Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 You may want to take a look at these documents. FM Server using PHP FM Server using XML
FM_SouthAfrica Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 There is also Lasso http://www.lassosoft.com/ which as a non-developer I found easier to get into. However if you plan on having someone else do the work for you the you will probably find more PHP users than Lasso. I like Lasso because it works really well on Mac . . . I offer my site www.applecart.co.za as testimonial . . .
