Can you not alter files on the server? I tried to add a field to a table, I got a message saying the file is not modifiable. I also tried to link a dbs on the server to another on the server and got a message saying the file was open and for me to go through remote to access it. I was already in remote. I was the only one in the office and didn't have FM open on my PC. I also removed the files I wanted to link and alter and got the same message about the file not being modifiable. Is there a lock on the Database that locks the whole thing? HELP

Where are you trying to do all of this? How are you accessing the files exactly.

Not from the server. I am going through my computer through "remote". I have managed to accomplish everything I was trying for except... I can open one dbs and close it, but when I try to link to it I get a message "it is in use and to access it through remote (I am already in romote to the server) So I go the same path through the remote and server and then it opens. I can't understand why I have to follow the same path twice to link to the dbs.

Thanks

What do you mean by "link" to the DBs?

If the files reside on the same [color:blue]PATH level as the current file, then you can just state:

file:YourOtherFile

You should be able to reference it while it is still being served.

What does it look like now under the Manage External Data sources? Take a screen shot and attach it as a gif.

Ok here is the issue, when you add a new data source ( or edit one ), one hit the button to Add File. Do not navigate to a shared path... Instead, hit the 'Remote' button on the bottom right hand corner...

Currently, you are trying to access the file through a shared path when it is already being hosted by FileMaker Server and thus you are gettin your errors... This is dangerous... You should never access served files this way. It will corrupt your files. If I were you, I would turn off Window directory sharing to that folder so that no one access it that way.
