June 6, 200817 yr I got a weird one. This is only for testing on my 9.0v3 FileMaker Pro Advance Desktop... no server interaction. I set up a MySQL ODBC connection. No problem. Way easier that I would have thought. I went to test it with an import records from ODBC data source.... what do you know! It showed up fine in the drop down. Worked perfectly. I went to add it as an external data source, and NONE of the odbc data sources (either the mysql one or the default MS ones) were visible. Any ideas? I've Googled around a bit and found no hints. -Jeff
June 6, 200817 yr The setup on the import is independant of that for ESS. Go to mange databases and put a new ODBC source.
June 7, 200817 yr Author I'm sorry, I should have specified I tried that too. No DSNs show up in the list provided by the "Select OBDC Data Source" window. But the same window, with the same title, that shows up when I import data lists 4 DSNs. -Jeff

I believe you are missing something here but I could be wrong ... there should be no 'default' ones here but only ones you have specifically added in Data Sources. Have you gone to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Data Sources ( ODBC ) ... then selected the System DSN tab and add your OWN connection; pointing to your table or view? Only ones ADDED here ( under System DSN ) can be mounted as an External Data Sources. And the same would be true for importing; you say it worked but did you take it clear through the import process or did you just see the list of Sources and just assume it would work? It would be a natural misconception ... LaRetta :wink2:

LaRetta I too, thought there would be no "default" ones, but I see: dBASE Files Excel Files MS Access Database In addition to my own DSN that I set up under Administrative Tools > Data Sources ( ODBC ). I assume these three were added by MS Office. And I did go all the way through a successful import. I got data that I had put into MySQL to show up in FM. But when I go to add the external data source, nothing shows up. Anything else I should try? Thanks for you help! Please keep the suggestions coming. -Jeff
June 7, 200817 yr I too, thought there would be no "default" ones, but I see: dBASE Files Excel Files MS Access Database That is when you select IMPORT. I am talking about when you select File > Manage > External Data Sources. You must then click 'New', Type: ODBC and DSN Specify ... and from there, add your data sources into the graph. If there are no data sources listed THERE, then you have not set them up as I've explained. Have you downloaded the ESS documentation that FileMaker has provided?
June 7, 200817 yr I too, thought there would be no "default" ones, but I see: dBASE Files Excel Files MS Access Database This is true under the USER DSN settings, not the System DSN settings as LaRetta stated.
June 8, 200817 yr Author This is true under the USER DSN settings, not the System DSN settings as LaRetta stated. DOH! Sorry LaRetta... I should have read more carefully. I never saw the User and System difference. It never clicked. Works fine now! Thanks so much!! -Jeff
