Hide a duplicate field used as a category in portal

My table includes a category field. The records are sorted by category. When I display the records in a Portal, I want to display only the first occurrence of a category. Is there a way to hide a field if it is the same as in the previous record? Records may be deleted from the portal, which could change which record needs to display the category.

Is there a (better) way to do this? Thank you.

Your structure may be off. If you have a table of categories, this could be much easier and perhaps the beset approach.

Otherwise, you may need to use a modified version of this method.

Perhaps I am mistaken, but I read the question in a different way. I believe the answer can be found here:

Ah perhaps that is what the OP meant. I read it differently at first.

After much looking, I want to group Tasks by Category using a feature similar to Report with Grouped Data on the List/Report layout wizard, only displayed in a Portal instead of on a list. Is this possible?
