GreenPilgrim Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 I have a repeating field that payment amounts are entered into. I need a script that will cause the date and time to be auto-entered into an non-editable list when a payment is entered into the repeating field. Is this possible?
Vaughan Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 Save yourself a lot of grief and lose the repeating fields. Use a relational structure instead. If each payment was a related record, the date could be auto-entered into a field. This can be set to not allow changes. No script necessary.
GreenPilgrim Posted September 10, 2008 Author Posted September 10, 2008 Well, I would do that, but I don't know how to convert my current payment schedule to a better form and import all the data from the repeating fields. This is an old database and unless I can figure out how to upgrade it, I'm afraid I'm stuck with it. This is a small business and my boss isn't willing to spend the $$$ it would take to have a pro upgrade it for us, as it would be expensive. We also have some security issues that need to be addressed. I think I'm going to have to convince him that we need a pro in here for a couple of days. He doesn't understand why I can't just fix it. I tell him it's beyond my scope of understanding and he just stares at me with this glazed over look. :idunno:
mr_vodka Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 Tell your boss to read this thread. : http://fmforums.com/forum/showtopic.php?tid/193440 BTW, you should be able to import the records into a new table. You will be prompted asking you if you want to split the repeating fields into seperate records. That should get you started.
GreenPilgrim Posted September 18, 2008 Author Posted September 18, 2008 There's no reason to disparage my bosses character because of my lack of knowledge. He's had a very difficult year and is trying to save his business. He's been very kind, not only to me, but to many, many other people and it's not his fault that he has to depend on me to help him with this matter. I'm sorry that I can't help him better, but right now our financial situation doesn't warrant hiring a professional. I have worked for him for 14 years, and this database was developed and piece milled together through all those years. That's the reason the repeating fields have never been dealt with. For a little business, with never a tech of any sort helping us at all, we've managed pretty well. I'm aware that I'm no Filemaker developer and I've hit a snag trying to convert this layout from repeating fields, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to succeed. I am going to. If no one wants to help us, that's fine. We're creative people, we'll figure it out. I'm determined to help this man to the end, as he is an unusual man who is devoted to his employees and in turn, has my loyalty. Though I thank you for your help, I can't help but take exception by your attack on him without knowing anything about him at all. He would probably have more money to hire a professional if he didn't have the need to help so many people who are needy. I'll encourage him to quit being so benevolent and save his funds for a professional; so he doesn't have to trust me to fix it once and for all.

I gave you a reference so that you had a justified arguement when going in to try and convince him. ( again based on what you stated) Nowhere did I "Attack" him, say anything about his character, or as a matter of fact demean your "creativity to succeed". There was no need for you to submit his personal bio. I was just trying to help you as there are tons of posts on here saying almost the exact same thing as you have regarding not hiring a professional. This is a small business and my boss isn't willing to spend the $$$ it would take to have a pro upgrade it for us IS [color:red]NOT THE EQUIVALENT TO but right now our financial situation doesn't warrant hiring a professional. Personally, I have no problem helping anyone on here but if you going to take offense to everything that is posted on here or twist my words then I am afraid that my assistance will end there.
