Newbies RBLA Posted October 30, 2008 Newbies Posted October 30, 2008 I am using FileMaker Server 8 and FMP 8. I have a database file of products that is shared and resides on a windows xp pro machine that is our dedicated FileMaker server. I would like to add pictures to this database. More specifically just file references to the pictures as I don't want the database to get huge and I understand this is the recommend procedure. Where the best place to store those pictures? I would like to create a shared folder where my users can upload pictures to. Is it better to create this shared picture folder on a separate file server or should I create a shared folder on the machine that is hosting FileMaker Server? Thanks!
mr_vodka Posted October 30, 2008 Posted October 30, 2008 Seperate Shared FileServer. You really shouldnt have any other traffic going to the FM Server than the data that is needed.
IdealData Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 (edited) BEWARE! When you store references only, the file path is generated based on the current connection to the file server. 1. If you change the server name or any of the directory structure then you will lose all your references, although you could fix them 2. Clients might select images that are on the client machine, no on else would be able to see them. 3. Clients must be connected to the file server in the same way as each other. 4. Clients must be connected to the file server in order to view any images. 5. This won't work with mixed platform clients as the file paths are different. 6. You won't get any web publishing to display the images. Edited October 31, 2008 by Guest
Ocean West Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 Sounds like its time to upgrade of FM 9 and an introduction to SuperContainer by 360Works
