Close Database from FMPro

Featured Replies

Hello,

I just upgraded from FM4 (yeah, I know) to FM9 (Server and Pro). In the old version, a FMP user could close the database on the Server (as in take offline) in order to do maintenance (archive data, modify db, etc). I can't seem to find that functionality in the new version and giving access to the Admin Console is not something I'd like to do. Am I missing something or am I out of luck?

Thanks,

Mark

The functionality has been moved from FMP to a separate application. With FMS 9.0 it's a Java app.

Too get it, point your web browser to

Thanks for the reply. I am aware of the Admin Console at http://server:16000 however that gives the user full access to the server config and all they really need is to close & open databases and send messages. There wouldn't happen to be a way to give access to just that part? I have a feeling 'no' but I have to ask.

Thanks,

Mark

Users should not have access to close or open databases on the server.

It sounds as though you want to run a hosting service where the "users" are customers who may need to open, close upload their own databases.

If so, an expert in the field like John May of Point in Space would know.

Actually, I'm not trying to do hosting. But I do have 2 people that are end users of the databases but are also responsible for simple maintenance (archiving data, small UI modifications, etc). So you could consider them user/developers. They need to be able to kick people out of the database and close it so they can do their maint. But I would prefer not to give them full access to the console.

Is there perhaps a command line tool to close and open databases that I could wrap with something? I read that fmsadmin can do that in unix/mac but that command does nothing for me in windows.

Thanks for the help,

Mark

You can use command line to perform the same functions as the admin console but the user name and password of the admin console will have to be used so technically, they can access the admin console with it as well.

How do you do it from the command line? I tried running fmservercommonjavabinfmsadmin.exe but nothing happens, not even an error.

They can perform these actions on hosted files, but I strongly recommend against that.

Steven

cd c:Program FilesFileMakerFileMaker ServerDatabase Server

fmsadmin CLOSE will close the files.

Steven, John:

Thanks for the replies. I might try to wrap a webservice of some kind around the cli to expose the functionality I need. I know it's not ideal but it should be relatively ok in our restricted network.

Thanks for the help,

Mark
