Set the field validation to unique.

how do you check for that in a scrip, Formula, function

If you type something, and it is not unique, and you have the validation tab set to 'unique' then FileMaker won't let the User put that text in the field.

If you need to know whether a value exists in a field BEFORE creating a record (for example, via script), then we need a bit more information. What are you trying to do and why? :wink2:
