Yes another one that searches for hierarichal things. :

I've searched the whole day on google, but i couldn't find anything that will help me. i will explain what i want.

I have a table with content and another one wich says it's an parent or an child

-----------

[ content ]

-----------

[ -id ]

[ -text ]

-----------

-----------

[ link ]

-----------

[ -parent ]

[ -child ]

-----------

so...

[ content ]-----<[ content ]

How can i make an Hierarichal portal for this?

I have no idea what you're asking, a bit too abstract. Can you use real data in your explanation.

ok, some more information :

for example:

base

id name root-group

1 1st-one 1

groupmodel:

id name

1 group one

2 group two

3 group three

4 group four

5 group five

6 group six

parentgroup_subgroup

parent_id child_id

   1 2

   1 3

   2 4

   3 5

   4 6

I want to view this in an portal like this:

- group one [+] [-] [e]

    - group two [+] [-] [e]

        - group four [+] [-] [e]

            - group six [+] [-] [e]

    - group three [+] [-] [e]

        - group five [+] [-] [e]

but also to expand and collapse it. and also to add/edit/delete items.

thanks in advance! ;)

Hey Ravenix,

I, too, am busy trying to understand hierarchies in Filemaker (and soon I might ask here a few questions myself ;) )

It looks like it is a rather complex topic.

Here is what I’ve found so far:

Mikhail Edoshin wrote a white paper on how to implement hierarchical structures in Filemaker:

http://edoshin.skeletonkey.com/2008/07/hierarchies-in.html

(Look for the link at the very top of the webpage.)

In this paper he also describes a very interesting and simple basic hierarchical structure with a custom order of child records at the bottom of page 3.

Edoshin describes hierarchical tree views in list view; when it comes to tree views in portals these three solutions here might be of interest for you:

Excelisys

http://www.excelisys.com/web/downloads/index.php

Hierarchical Portals (white paper and demo) and Hierarchical Portals Advanced (demo)

Seedcode

http://www.seedcode.com/cp-app/ste_cat/schierarchy

Seedcode sells a very professional looking solution.

Filemaker Magazine

http://www.filemakermagazine.com/videos/unlimited-infinite-hierarchies.html

This solution requires Filemaker 10.

The first three mentioned sources also deal with expanding and collapsing, adding and deleting items.

(Um... as for searching Google all day long: Have you tried entering filemaker hierarchies? : )

I don't think that answers my question. In any case, you can download demos of hierarchical portals here:

http://www.excelisys.com/web/downloads/index.php

http://www.seedcode.com/downloads

and take them apart to see how they work. Note that this is a particularly difficult undertaking, hardly suitable for a beginner.

Yes for 2 days almost now.. And so i've already saw that 3 demo's. But they're build on a different view of the problem. They look to the problem as designers of the layout. I look to the problem as a database designer ;)
