GaryA Posted July 10, 2009 Posted July 10, 2009 I am having a problem with overlapping portals. What I have is several portals each with one field that relate to the selection in a previous field. I am using the Portal Visibility trick which for the most part is working as expected. The problem is that the only Portal that allows editing is the topmost one in the layout. If I make a different selection in the previous field the correct Portal displays but you can not change it unless you go back into the layout and move it to the front. Is there anyway to make this work.
mr_vodka Posted July 10, 2009 Posted July 10, 2009 I think that you should user hidden tabs instead and have each of your portals on these tabs.
GaryA Posted July 10, 2009 Author Posted July 10, 2009 (edited) Do you have any links or examples of this? I would love to try it out. One of my field setups: Field 1 Field 2 Field 3 If Field 1 = Online --> Display Field 2 If Field 1 = Retail --> Display Field 3 So Fields 2 & 3 would each have there on tab?? Would I have a script set on Field 1 to tell the program which tab to switch to?? This may work but I have about 30 conditional fields like this so I do not know how well this will work. mr_vodka Posted July 10, 2009 Posted July 10, 2009 Well yes you can do this with multiple hidden tabs and using Go to Object, and since you have 10 with a script trigger even. But from what you posted, it may be that your structure may be off. Why are there so many conditional fields?
GaryA Posted July 10, 2009 Author Posted July 10, 2009 This is how the some of the fields are: Field 1 (Online, Hard Goods, Both) ^-Field 2 (If "Online" display Drop down list for "Online" selections.) ^-Field 2 (If "Hard Goods" display Drop down for "Hard Goods" selections.) ^^^^-Field 3 (If "Online" is selected in Field 1 and "eCommerce site" is selected in Field 2 display "eCommerce sites" dropdown.) ^^^^-Field 3 (If "Hard goods" is selected in Field 1 and "Other" is selected in Field 2 display the "Other notes" edit box.) There are several selections such as the above. All of the drop downs are custom lists. Does this help explain how it works?
mr_vodka Posted July 10, 2009 Posted July 10, 2009 I think you should do some research into conditional value lists. You can do an advanced search on here for +conditional +valuelist
GaryA Posted July 10, 2009 Author Posted July 10, 2009 The conditional part of it isn't the problem, the problem is that the different lists have to be displayed in the same area as each other depending on what the previous selection is. Then depending on the selection the different value lists each store data in their own respective fields. Everything would work great if it would let me overlap the Portals. How would I do this with different tabs? I started working with the tabs and duplicating the Layout. Would I need a seperate tab for every possible combination that would have overlapping portals??
GaryA Posted July 10, 2009 Author Posted July 10, 2009 I am pretty sure we are going to change the setup a bit so that it is not so complicated and I am going to use the conditional lists. Thanks
