August 9, 200916 yr I own FM9 Adv, 1 license. We have 4 Macs, MacBook, G4, Mini, G3 iMac. Currently FM DB is on my MacBook and I need the secretary (G4) to start using the DB and IWP won't do it due to printing needs. The needs will be to host the DB on the G4 or on a third computer that both of us can access. I suppose if I host this on a 3rd computer, that it will require a 3rd license, would I be better off getting a sever version for the above situation? -- Also, if I host the DB on the G4 through an 802.11g connection, how will performance of the DB on my MacBook be? -- Would there be any advantages to FM10 for the above?
August 9, 200916 yr FM Server might be a bit of overkill for the scope of your operation as FMP will happily handle several guests, in fact the limit is 9 users. The hosting machine can still be used as a 'client' too, so you should install the database on a machine that is on most of the time. FM Server brings in new disciplines - it must run on a dedicated machine, however there some 'proper' server features built in - making backups for example. But with some sensible usage of FMP and a little bit of control you can still make a usable system with just FMP. BTW, FM10 requires OS X 10.4, so the iMac might be out of the equation.
August 9, 200916 yr It depends on how much you value your data and how critical it is for you. I generally recommend the use of FileMaker Server if the data are important to your business. Steven
August 16, 200916 yr You could consider external hosting of your database. Factors to consider: 1. You don't need any hardware to run the DB 2. You don't need any software to run the DB 3. You don't need to manage the DB 4. Speed limited by your internet connection 5. Monthly fees apply 6. You can access from anywhere on the web provided you have FM on your machine.
August 16, 200916 yr If you're just using the machines on your LAN to access your database, external hosting would really not be your best avenue. In that case, I'd recommend a local server running FileMaker Server, which can run on a relatively low powered machine considering your needs (eg: a well-backed-up Mac Mini or the likes). The MacBook should do fine on a wifi connection too. Otherwise, if you need access from machines on disparate networks, external hosting would certainly be more economical. August 17, 200916 yr Apache is just a web server. You need FileMaker Server to host your databases. - John
