running filemaker twice, simultaneously?

Featured Replies

I wasn't sure where to put this question.

I have windows XP and I'm using version pro 10 advanced, and I'm wondering if there's anyway to essentially run filemaker twice at the same time.

The problem is that I've been having to run a lot of looped scripts that take a long time to finish. And then, while i'm doing that, I can't use any of my other databases (unless i convert them to runtime - which i don't want to do)

I don't want to carry two laptops around, so i'm wondering if there's any other way to solve this.

I was thinking it'd be great if it were possible to have filemaker running twice, independently, as some programs allow.

If anyone has an answer, please let me know soon. I'm very very busy today, and it's annoying that I can't use my databases while i'm running scripts.

I've done this in the past by having two versions of filemaker on my computer for instance 10, and 10 advanced and running them at the same time. I imagine you could probably install another filemaker 10 advanced install on your machine in a different location as well and it would work.

This of course is predicated upon the assumption that you have multiple licenses or a site license.

To add to what Jessie suggested, you can run multiple copies of the same version, i.e. Advance and Standard Edition of FileMaker Pro 10. You could also run two copies of Advance, just as long as they have different serial numbers.

I can't afford two copies of Advance 10, so I use Advance v9 and Advance v10 sometimes. Only problem in mixing the versions, is if you need to work with a Version 10 Only Functions such as Script Triggers.

I often run several different versions at the same time (6 Developer, and 8.5, 9, and 10 Advance)

If you have enough system resources, you can also run FileMaker independently in a virtual environment. It is a bit overkill, but if you happen to have a license for another installation of Windows, you can make it happen that way.

A while back, Microsoft started distributing VirtualPC for free. The multi-platform free VirtualBox is available for Windows also.
