From Windows to Mac

Featured Replies

This may seem a little redundant, but I have a solution built in Windows, but would like to rebuild it on MAC OS. I'm not familiar with MAC much, but can anyone give me some advice on the BEST way to go about this? Would I completely have to rebuild the solution in MAC from the ground up, or is there any shortcuts I could take such as importing script, layouts, etc?? Is that EVEN possible from Windows to MAC?

FileMaker is cross platform - your database should run equally well on both Windows and Mac.

There are some minor platform differences with a few script steps and calculation formulae, and fonts will render differently - but essentially it should run "as is".

Off the top of my head, some x-plat issues are:

1. On Windows, if you open a window on top of a window that has been maximized, the original window will resize down to its last sized dimensions. The rule is to not use Maximize on Windows.

2. Yes, fonts will render differently, usually a pixel or two larger in Windows. Enough to wrap a text label and mess up a layout.

3. Check out anything that uses a path. Paths need to be adjusted if you use filemac vs filewin.

Otherwise, you're probably 90% good to go. No rewrite!

PS: I think it's probably less work to go from Windows to Mac, since your fonts will be smaller.

Thanks Barbara and Mark. Whew! I was worried for a minute, but I should be good to go, thanks again.
