Newbies FMPNick Posted March 23, 2001 Newbies Posted March 23, 2001 Hi all, I am creating a runtime cross plateform app. I am using the Binder that comes w/ version 5. When I bind my solution on my mac everything works perfectly. However, when I bind on the PC, I go through the normal process for creating a runtime. It goes through the process and at the end of the process I get the message everything worked successfully. I go to my solutions folder where there are odles of .DLL files (17), the app file and the .USR file. When I click on my app file the hour glass comes up but the app does not launch. I have noticed that my .USR file is being treated as if it is not associated with any app. What am I doing wrong? I made sure that all FMP apps & docs were closed when I began binding & the only app running was Developer. I'm sure I am doing somthing wrong but please help me regain my sanity. I wish all things could work as easily on a PeeCee than they do on my beloved Mac . Anyway, if you have any questions or words of advice I would greatly appreciate it. Nick -)
David McKee (Protolight) Posted March 23, 2001 Posted March 23, 2001 It could be that there is some corruption in your windows registry. Have you had problems with it recently? I'd test on another windows machine to eliminate any configuration-specific issues. Hope this helps! -Dave
DykstrL Posted March 24, 2001 Posted March 24, 2001 If you used the 'USR' extension for another solution, those files magically become part of the other solution. AND if you used a different binding key, they just won't open. If you had a version 4 bound solution, they will definitely not open - the version 4 runtime engine is trying to open a version 5 file. Open the file types tab under the view/options menu and find the 'USR' association and delete it. Then try to run your solution again. It should register as the executable for 'USR' files. OR use another extension that you are sure is not used by any other windows programs. If you are developing different bound packages, you NEED to use different extensions to avoid conflicts between your solutions.
Newbies FMPNick Posted March 27, 2001 Author Newbies Posted March 27, 2001 LSDykstra & David, Thank you both for your replys. I am contining to have more trouble. I think David is correct in stating that maybe my registry is corrupt. I have bound my solution a few times and have be able to launch it successfully on another PC. However, on on the other PC, I have functionality no longer working like my spell check, I am using a 3rd party Troi plug-in to import a reference of an image that is not working, etc..... What is going on :? Keep in mind that all features are working perfectly on my mac bound solution. Anyway, if you could shed more light or make any other suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. If you have any question please e-mail me at [email protected]. Nick
Chris Wood Posted March 29, 2001 Posted March 29, 2001 I could be missing hte point, But originally you said "When I click on my app file the hour glass comes up but the app does not launch." Could your problem be that youare trying to open the file with .USR instead of opening the file with the .EXE
aeleth Posted May 16, 2001 Posted May 16, 2001 Hi Nick! I'm having the exact same problem you are describing. When I try to open my runtime EXE file the hourglass appears for a second or two, but the application refuses to launch. Earlier this week I called FM, and was told to search for Article #107071 in the FM Techinfo Database. This article refers to the full-version of FMP, not the runtime version. However, I was told by FM support that it applies also to FMP runtime applications because the application engine is essentially the same. Basically, this article refers to some known problems with the Creative Sound Blaster PCI Driver. When I followed the directions to uninstall the relevant drivers, I continued to have problems with my FMP5 runtime solutions. I've spent the past few days running some simple tests, and have been able to successfully bind some of the sample databases that are bundled with FMP5. However, I am still having problems binding a database that I need to make changes to. For the record, I have bound this particular database successfully on both platforms without incident in the past. I'm going to continue to work towards resolving this problem over the next 2 days - I will post here if I learn anything new. Mercury Posted May 17, 2001 Posted May 17, 2001 I had a similar problem with bound applications that would work on one PC but not on another. I found the solution to be Internet Explorer; in fact and more accurately, the lack of IE. On Win9x machines, IE4 must be installed for the runtime applications to work. Of course, later versions of IE also serve the purpose. This little gem of information is tucked away on page 4-2 of the FMP Developer manual.
