HI,

I was wondering if anyone can enlighten me on the best setup for using FM server with an overseas office.

Currently when I have users connect in the USA to the databases the speed is very acceptable. However as soon I go over the the pond, may it be Atlantic or Pacific it comes to a screeching halt. It is no longer usable.

Can any of you tell me what would resolve this.

-Go to a company that hosts FM databases, assuming that those connections are faster?

-Better servers internally?

We will be on a mixed platform, with overseas on Windows and USA on MAC.

I appreciate the help, thanks.

We use a local server for connections in that area and then transfer data (as needed) at night or off hours. We have used that for areas like China and Botswana.

Check out www.worldsync.com. This will allow you to sync your local server with the remote server. Pretty slick.

There are a number of factors that can affect your response. In particular, your network latency is going to make a huge difference with FileMaker Network Sharing.

Our servers are literally zero hops from the Level 3 backbone (same building), minimizing latency as much as possible on our end. Of course, the client end can introduce latency as well.

You may want to try a trial account with us to see if it works well for you - we have numerous clients in Australia and Japan connecting to us with great success. All of our FileMaker Hosting accounts include a 30 day trial, whereby if you cancel for any reason within the first 30 days you owe nothing. Have a look at http://www.pointinspace.com/ , and let me know if you have any questions either here or off-list to jmay(at)pointinspace.com.

Can you elaborate on the syncing feature? Do you mean importing and exporting files?

Right now we are doing this with changed records but it is not very efficient or clean.
