Newbies carguy8 Posted February 10, 2001 Newbies Posted February 10, 2001 Can anyone recommend the best procedure for sharing a database file between two computers in two locations. Changes are made to each database at each location and then copied to the other. I have copied the .fp3 after changes are made on to a zip disk and then when brought to the second location I have dragged the file over the .fp3 file in that computer in Windows Explorer. Is there a better method using some sort of back-up and restore command. I am currently using Filemaker Pro 4.0 under Windows 98SE. Any suggestions?
john.daly Posted February 10, 2001 Posted February 10, 2001 Well you could write a script to backup the file and then onother one to import the data into the second database but if you are managing OK then I can't see the problem. What isn't clear is whether you are making chages to both databases simultaneously or do you make changes in A, then overwrite B with A and then make changes in B etc.?
Vaughan Posted February 11, 2001 Posted February 11, 2001 This synchronisation issue was done to death a couple of months ago, in the context of mobile users updating a master file. The conclusion then was: don't. The issue of "most recent version" quickly gets complicated to the point of madness. What if I spend a day updating a record that somebody else has deleted? The "proper" way to manage the issue is to share the databases so that all users log-into and work on a single copy of the database.
