Duplication Problems

We are using FileMaker Pro 4 and we are having a duplicating field problem. When enters a new record number (i.e. 2000-365) and the number already exists on different record there is no warning saying "This number already exsists." Is there a way fix that?

Go into Feild definitions, options, validation. Select the "unique" option.
