we have two very serious problems:

1) when we recovered the FileMaker Pro 4.0 this morning, the system didn't show up any file lost or skipped after finished, however, we really did lost some records. what should we recover it?

2) we have two database(1 good, 1 bad) in FM4 and we like to retrive some good records from the bad data base and import the record to the good databas. How do I export the fields in the same

layout formats of found records of bad database ?

I did try to export all fields to a file in FM

format, but the layout aren't the same.

Thanx

George Hsu

It will be job for 5 minutes for me.

What I can recommend and what will always work is that you will export text files separated with TABs.

1. Find the records you need to export.

2. Export TAB delimited text

3 Import that file into FM and shift data so the align into required fields.

Or you can try this also with standard FM format; the work with aligning will be the same.

Text will have advantage, because you can manipulate it for example in Excel.

I don't remember but can 4.0 export to Excel? Because I would export to Excel and see if all the data there is what you want and solid...then I would export it back to FMP.

Depending on number of records, FM4 will fail to import Excel file.

But the text import/export in FM and Excel will work in any number of records.

To whom it may concern:

Well, Then how do I select only the fields that in the current found set of records for exporting?

It looks that I only can either select one by one

or all. Then, not all fields export to the output file. May there be the export records limit? Even

I select all the fields for exporting, then I only

can delete the unwanted field individually (one by

one). Is there anyway I can select a group of fields that I want to delete from the export list?

(I try it by holding "Shift key", just like in Window Explorer, but it doesn't work).

Thanx for responding...

First of all, let's not confuse "fields" and "records". FM exports only the RECORDS in the current found set. Which FIELDS are exported is controlled in the export dialog box. The selections of fields to export can be done one at a time, all, or all followed by clearing those you don't want. If you have sooo many fields that this is a serious problem, it is a sure sign of a poor database design.
