Charity Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Hello great fellow forum inhabitants! Ya'know how you can put your cursor in a field and then ctrl-i and it shows the index and you can even if you want, show word index (although I have no clue why you would want that)... Anyway, can I give person script to bring that open for them to select from? Okay, I think it is kinda handy and it might save me from having to create value lists all the time. I think it would need to be like this person has cursor in field then types (something) which does not type into the field to activate the script. Or maybe it is button on top of layout? Possible? Or triggers? then lastly, if they put something in the field they shouldn't have, it puts the value back to previous. Okay, this is just kinda a fun part I just added but have not thought through. There simply must be a way to control that View Index window when I want it, right?
Charity Posted December 13, 2011 Author Posted December 13, 2011 Never mind. Is it improper to delete a post if it was stupid and I was the one who wrote it?
comment Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Why do you think it was "stupid"? FMI obviously didn't think so when they provided the Insert from Index[] script step. Whether it's a good user interface to have is another question.
Charity Posted December 13, 2011 Author Posted December 13, 2011 I had been studying field indexing with test file and value lists and I had been up for 30 hours. I got side-tracked in field definitions and was searching for GetIndex(table::field) or something similar. I found Insert from Index script immediately after posting although I had read Help on Index several times but it did not stick (obviously) that there was script step. I kept thinking 'field index'. I wanted to then delete the post because I was embarrassed but I thought some nice person might be responding and it would be rude of me if they posted and my post just vanished underneath them. I was not suggesting that the script step was stupid - the post was, or more specifically, I was. :hmm:
LaRetta Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Hey Char, you weren't stupid - you were tired. Sleep is critical to good developing. Vacuum cleaners need to run at night, sucking up all of the mental confusion and allowing room for your sub-conscience to categorize the important things you have learned throughout the day. If you do not sleep then what you learn will not be categorized and will instead either stay suspended and spinning in your mind (which will drive you insane) or it will slip right back out your ears and be lost. Learning when tired is not learning. I was an expert on sleep deprivation. Don't worry about deleting a post of yours if nobody has responded. If someone is responding and your post is gone then they will quickly figure out that you removed it because you solved it.
Charity Posted December 13, 2011 Author Posted December 13, 2011 Thank you LaRetta, that makes me feel better and I will try to sleep; it's just that I had major test plus I had to work plus I had to study FileMaker. Sleep just has never been important to me before but I see your point. And hopefully I will never ask another dumb question. I guess I still want to know why Comment said, "Whether it's a good user interface to have is another question." Hello Comment, I have now come to that question because it seems that selecting ctrl-I is same as creating a value list using all values on a field. So using it would save creating a value list of those values. It might replace many value lists in fact. That would save resources and be more efficient, right? Pasting from that Index dialog is no different than selecting from a popup, is it? I tried and people would not be able to select more than one entry and they cannot insert an index from a different field. But I worry because I have not read of anyone using it so I wonder why. And if it is not a good idea, can we stop people from bring up that box when they hit ctrl-i when in a field? Thank you both for helping me. The folks on this forum are very nice. Char()
comment Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Pasting from that Index dialog is no different than selecting from a popup, is it? Let's see: A pop-up pops up from the field; the index window always appears at its last location, no matter which field is involved. A pop-up indicates the current selection. A pop-up doesn't have confusing options, like 'Show individual words', or 'Re-sort values based on [Catalan]'. A pop-up can show the "second-field" values, while inserting the value from the "first-field" of a value list.
Charity Posted December 14, 2011 Author Posted December 14, 2011 Oh duh. Think girl think. I was convinced immediately on the first one. I was going to write a lot more but I am practicing not. You listed the reasons clearly. I will think it through more next time. BTW, that Index window should at least put the name of the field it is displaying the index from right on its own window. So it is worthless except to me when I want to see the type of data in a field. Nix this whole idea. On to other discoveries or other games. Thank you again Comment. Oh, and the script step is stupid after all. Char
