FileMaker Quitting

Featured Replies

I'm 10 databases, both web shared and multiple user, on a beige G3 running 9.2.1. FileMaker 5 unlimited

FileMaker Quits several times a day. It seems to happen, though not consistently, when people close shared files.

Any ideas as to what's causing this?

Did you check your dbs or harddrive for corruption?

Check the TCP log to see if anything is mentioned (I doubt it, but still...)

I would also recommend not using a single copy of FMP to be both a host and a web server (esp with unlimited which indicates a high-traffic solution). Also, If you have more than 10 network users, use FMS.

What else is running on this machine? Is memory tight on that machine?

Server will just share databases.

Clients will work with the data from server.

Unlimited will open databases from the same server and will make the data accessible from web.

You will have data consistency.

I also want to point out that you will have SEPERATE machines for each of these.

Filemaker Server should run on its own server-class machine, as should all database servers, with no other software applications running.

Filemaker Unlimited should run on either its own machine, or on the same machine as the web server application.

Filemaker Pro client will then run on your various workstations.

FileMaker is the only thing I'm running. Plenty of memory.

I wasn't aware I could run two copies of FM at the same time. How do I go about this?

Also, I have some files that are updated in multi-user mode, and viewed on the web. I have to have multi-user and Web companion turned on to do this.

I thought that I couldn't run web published databases through FMS.

Hi Kurt,

We're having the same conversation on two different threads. I'll stick to this one.

Is there anything special I should know about running both FMS and Unlimited on the same machine?

Do NOT do this. No database server application should ever be run on a machine along with other software. Secondly running 2 copies of Filemaker software is REALLY slow, as both are fighting for the same system resources. Third this makes your database server available on the web, very bad security problem.

Filemaker Server gets its own server-class machine, Unlimited runs either on the webserver or its own workstation-class machine.

OK, Unlimited and Server on separate machines.

How do I keep data consistency? Does the Unlimited machine open the database as a guest then post it to the web?

This is exactly how it works. The copy of Unlimited connects to the Filemaker Server as a guest and then allows you to make the databases that are opened on Unlimited available to the web.
