July 17, 201213 yr I can cut and paste text from, say, another application into an input box on FM Pro if I am on the host computer. But when I am a client connected to a host, pasting text no longer works: I have to input text data by hand. Is there any way to enable pasting of text on a client? Thanks.
July 17, 201213 yr Author I did some experimenting and should add that this problem doesn't occur when create a simple test that tries to reproduce the cases in my database where I can't paste text from a client computer connected remotely to a host. In my simple reproductions, I can paste text from the clipboard no problem on a client computer connected remotely to the host (on a LAN, for example). So it's hard for me to say what it is about the situation in my actual database that would cause text from the clipboard not to be pastable. Does anyone know what might be causing the problem, i.e. making it it impossible to paste text into a field remotely from a client when one can do it on the host? Would I need to attach my database before anyone would be in a position to provide insight?
July 17, 201213 yr Would I need to attach my database before anyone would be in a position to provide insight? That would be a good idea, since the behavior you describe is not normal FileMaker behavior. Zip the file before uploading.
July 18, 201213 yr Are you using a custom menu set? If so, make sure that you have not disabled the 'Paste' command. Filemaker uses the presence of commands on the menubar to determine if the functionality is available to the UI in general. So, if you use a custom menu set with no 'Paste' command, you will see not only have no 'Paste' option on the menubar, but it will also not appear in a contextual menu when you right-click on a field's contents in Browse mode, and Cntl-V (Cmd-V on mac) will also not work. The 'Paste' script step is available, however.
July 18, 201213 yr Author Thanks, Doughemi and Christensen Design, for your responses. I think I resolved the problem between yesterday and today, and your suggestions indirectly led me to the solution. I set up a test version of the database (eliminating all personal data). In testing it out myself first, I was able to observe some patterns I hadn't noticed before. When I and other users work remotely, we are generally using an account without full privileges. I noticed that when I logged in remotely as an administrator with full privileges, the problem disappeared. So I went into Manage Security and changed Available menu commands (an option I never knew existed) from Minimum to Editing only. Users can now cut and paste as they please.
