I can't seem to find an answer to this so it must be a really stupid question. Can I hot a FMpro 11 file on FMS12?

No

FileMaker 12 was totally rewritten, and they are not compatible. FileMaker 12 can migrate the v 11 files into its new format. For more information, read the many Topics in the General Topic for FMP 12.
