Win2000 server doesn't announce itself in host list

We have currently in our small business 2 Win2000 servers(same build and version) with filemaker 5.5 installed and running. Both servers have been setup almost identically but only one server shows up in the local hosts list when trying to connect from a win98 pc client. There is no conflict whatsoever regarding ip addresses we run an internal 10.10.10.x network and both servers are gated through the same firewall. The user accounts are the same on both servers and we have confirmed that both filemaker programs are identically setup regarding user and protocols(TCP/IP) and multiusersharing.

We can ping both servers without trouble and theres no difference in the routing tables(beside of course the ip address). Both servers belong to the same windows domain.

When we host Filemaker on a win98 machine the clients have no trouble seeing it, it works equally well on one of the Win2000 servers.

The win98 machine when hosting announces itself with the name given in the dns tab located in the properties of the TCP/IP protocol. We have noticed that this is not the same as the computer name written in the identification tab. is there a way to give a win2000 server a dns name that makes it announce itself? The servers are not running dns.

Any help regarding how to make filemaker on our win2000 server announce itself on our network would be greatly appreciated.

-Robert

  • 2 weeks later...

I've seen wierd stuff like this before, particularily when first firing up an installation. However, 10 or 15 minutes later these "Windows" beasts begin to see each other (if I'm lucky!). Even with FM Server 5.0 on a Windows 2K machine I sometimes have to go back two or three times and run FMSTART to see the host files on the network... and not from every guest. Other installations go smooth as silk. Thanks, but no thanks Bill!
