I use filemaker 9 and need to import from Notepad text in the following five fields in a record as I indicate below

record-1

Field-1

How should I proceed where you circle?

Field-2

Adapt speed to the road conditions.

Field-3

Make use of hazard lights to signal my presence.

Field-4

Reduce the distance that separates me from the vehicle ahead.

Field-5

Reduce speed and with circular beams.

record-2

Field-1

How do I run safely in

place where I am?

Field-2

Increase the stopping distance of the vehicle I drive.

Field-3

Circular idling making use of hazard lights.

Field-4

Keep safe distance from the vehicle in front.

Field-5

thank you

Sample of source data format?

five fields in a record

I don't know: it looks like each "record" holds one question and four possible replies. Properly, this should be structured as two related tables - Questions and Options, with each option being a separate record.

Sorry but I can not send the example

From what you describe in the last message, the file is actually PDF which will not directly import into Filemaker. Therefore consider using 360 Works Scriptmaster (SM) with the free java library pdfbox to automate the entire process. See this example for data extraction: http://www.printmyfolders.com/extracting-phone-numbers

Alternately, if you want to extract the data in an FM script rather than using SM to parse it, omit the regular expression and just return sb; This will return the PDF file as text to Filemaker, into a single field or local variable. If you cannot attach the PDF or Notepad file, just paste the text into the message. FM text functions can be used to parse out the fields and insert into the appropriate table(s). Alternately, if you have control of the program generating these files, altering it to output a CSV or tab-delimited file may be preferred. Consider also having SM find all these files in a given directory, then copying them out after processing to a 'processed' folder so as to automate this process. I had to do that recently on a project for a lab information management system wherein the gas chromatographry instrument sofware, generates XML files for each individual sample injection.

Hi Lilo, sorry I missed your post the other day.

If you tried to attach a file, it didn't make it. The process is rather easy, if you follow these steps.

Step 1

Find the file on your hard drive, and zip it.

Step 2

Do not use the Quick Reply, BUT instead, choose the More Reply Option

Step 3

Click on Attached Files and this will take you to your hard drive to locate your file that you want to attach and that you previously zipped. Select the file, and then click Attach This File, and then click Add Reply.
