Print from non visible layout

Is it possible to print from a layout in the current table without that layout being visible to the user. The reason for the question is that while the new themes look splendid I don't want to print using three tons of toner for colour fills and gradients so I want to create a print layout without all the frills but don't particularly want the user to have a different view from the input layout.

create a print layout. of course without all the bells and whistles it will have a different appearance.

I have no problem with that, what I am trying to avoid is that print layout being visible to the user when a print is performed.

Perhaps you could print from a new window, positioned off-screen?
