biredale Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 Hi all, I am a new user to FMP (13) and was reading about Instant Web Publishing (apparently FMP 12 documentation), I now understand that they have removed this feature, most likely in order to try and force people to pay for their hosting server service. I still would like to perform the same thing as IWP using FMP 13, web browser PC access, I understand the iOS access capability with FM Go... Any ideas or thoughts on whether this is possible? Thanks all!
Newbies deannerene Posted February 11, 2014 Newbies Posted February 11, 2014 Hi Biredale, I understand your confusion. Yes, IWP (Instant Web Publishing) is gone in FM 13. They have moved this to a new service called FileMaker WebDirect. This means you will need to be running FM Server Advanced to get a website directly from a FM database. There are advantages and disadvantages to this new scheme. The old IWP was quick and easy but very limited in what you could do and often you would have to make different processes and layouts for IWP and direct FM to make everything work properly. The new stuff is much improved but comes at a cost of processing power for the machine that is hosting the web data. This would be reason that it was moved to server only and has suggested limits on the number of users that can have simultaneous access to the web data. I hope this helps with your concerns D
Rick Whitelaw Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 There is no more FileMaker server advanced. Not FMS13.
biredale Posted February 11, 2014 Author Posted February 11, 2014 Well, that seems like a crappy way to try and force their customers to their paid server service. :-(
Josh Ormond Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 While it may seem to be driven by profit, it really is not the whole story. I am sure revenue to keep the company successful is a part of it...FileMaker Pro, and often the hardware used to run it, are simply not geared to run the feature set in WebDirect. If you are looking for something simple, without paying for the work to be done for you ( with WD ), you can still use Custom Web Publishing. The caveat being, you do need FMS to use CWP. For many, the value that FM offers far outweighs the actual cost. Though I do recognize there is a large customer base that simply doesn't have the funds to afford the software and hardware required. to run FMS. Fortunately, there are some very good FileMaker Hosting services. PointInSpace.com may be a good starting point for looking into that. Well, that seems like a crappy way to try and force their customers to their paid server service. :-(
Newbies daryltf Posted June 12, 2014 Newbies Posted June 12, 2014 ok so I was using Fm 12 and I was doing all of my jobs via an Ipad at Most two Ipads using FM recording job numbers and all the rest of the details. I have now moved to FM 13 I can not instance web host and I am told I need FM server. while yes I do have the money to do this in no way can I vailadate it for the amount of use it uses in the over all sceem. I just can't. so my work around is simple take it off line. host your file maker file on filemaker go. create a sync field that time stamps all your feilds. the when you bring you iPad to you centeral computer sync both file so as the highest time stamp over rides the data. yer I am a little annoyed too It set me back about a week trying to find a work around. but like it is stated for a big company that has several hundred people acccessing the file maker webpage 13 is the better option.
Newbies daryltf Posted June 12, 2014 Newbies Posted June 12, 2014 also the other option that I am thinking of going is using microsost 365 creating an excel document and doing the same it isnt filemaker but it does the same job and I find it is A. online and B. portalable and c. I dont have to mess around with time stamps. and D. cheaper
Josh Ormond Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Have you considered hosting the file via a FileMaker host like PointInSpace or others? There are several good hosts that you put the file up and host it for you. They typically run in the $25-30/month range. You will just need to make sure there is not a limit on access via FM Go ( or WebDirect if you use it ). Usually the restriction is on WebDirect because of the hardware requirements.
