First let me say thanks for any help and/or Guidance on this issue.

I'm in the process of updating a very old Database for out company. We use this Database to know what Jobs are in the shop and their History.

Currently it's a single flat database.

We have 2 main fields for this issue.

Job # - Text Field

History - Text Field

What users do now is when a new job comes in that is like a previous job they just update that record with new info.. The reason is so they can keep the history info. The History info is a manually entered... Used for Notes about the job.

What I'm wanting to do is get them to stop overwriting the Records so that at the end of the day, I can pull and use those records for other stuff/reports.. The issue that I'm trying to wrap my head around is how can the history info be retained - moved forward when a new Job is created?

Thanks

Devin

You're not giving us a lot go on, especially on how jobs get set up, but the quote above seems to be they key: don't let them change existing jobs, give them only the open jobs.  But you'll have to give us more info on how you set up jobs and how users can navigate and select jobs before we can help you out

Every thing is manual entered.. Each record is our Ticket. We use the tickets so that all the operators know how to handle the job as it moves thru the shop.

So we get a new Job 111.. A person enters all the info about that that Job in to a new record... Jobs procceds thru the shop. As it moves thru the shop certain people will enter notes about the job.

We get another new Job 2 week later.. Were told to do it just like Job 111. This new Job is 444. what needs to happen is the Notes section that was in Job 111 need to be tied to Job 444.

The reason I say tied vs copied is that we may get another New job a month later and they will tells us to do it like Job 111 even thou Job 444 was the same. They do this becasue they (sales staff) don't allways lookup the most recent job they want to match.
