Newbies Chazperx Posted May 4, 2002 Newbies Share Posted May 4, 2002 I am following a tutorial in "Filemaker Pro 5 Bible" by Steven Schwartz and on page 580, it talks about publishing a database to the web. The instructions are to open your database, select EDIT>PREFERENCES>APPLICATION and then select TCP/IP as your network protocol. The problem I am having is that there are no options on the drop down menu where is says network protocol. I was connected to the web at the time, and I don't know if this makes a difference. I was thinking it had something to do with the installation, and I was going to go back and check that too. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thans in advanced! Anatoli
Chaz -- If you want to server the web, only the machine need TCP/IP protocol on. I am serving WC on intranet with FM protocol set to NONE. The WC is talking directly to TCP/IP.
Newbies Chazperx Posted May 4, 2002 Author Newbies Share Posted May 4, 2002 Sorry...I'm very new.... When you say the machine needs TCP/IP Protocol on, how do I turn this on? Also, what is WC? Thanks Chaz
Anatoli
RE: When you say the machine needs TCP/IP Protocol on, how do I turn this on? Also, what is WC? That is question for operating system, not for FileMaker. It will be somewhere in control panels or Apple menu... WC is Web Companion and it is the engine (web server) for transferring the data from FM to browsers via TCP/IP standard Internet protocol.
Garry Claridge
In reply to: The problem I am having is that there are no options on the drop down menu where is says network protocol. You will need to have the various networking protocols enabled in your 'Control Panels' before they will appear in the Filemaker 'Network Protocol' dropdown. Hope this helps. Newbies Chazperx Posted May 4, 2002 Author Newbies Share Posted May 4, 2002 I assumed TCP/IP was working because I have a cable modem, and it is always hooked up, but I will try it out. Also, does Web Companion come with Filemaker Pro 5.5, or do I have to buy/download it? Thanks Again
Garry Claridge
If you are connecting to the Internet you can assume that TCP/IP is enabled. Are you using a Mac or Win? If a Mac, TCP/IP may not be enabled until you try to use a program which requires it. This can be switched on/off in the TCP/IP Control Panel Advanced settings. Web Companion (WC) comes with FMP. The latest version is FMP5.5v2 (WC is 5.5v3). All the best. Garry
Will
It's not clear from your post whether you are using a PC or Mac or what version of FileMaker you are using. It sounds like you may not have installed the FM network components. If you are using FM 5.5 try re-running setup - the default install should have installed all networking components. If you are using FM 5 do a custom install and make sure you add the network components. Please post if you resolve this.
Newbies Chazperx Posted May 6, 2002 Author Newbies Share Posted May 6, 2002 Thank you! I did just that, reinstalled, and now the TCP/IP is showing up. Thank You. Will the database form I see on the screen look the same as the form on the web, or will there be slight or great diffrences? Thanks again!
