Please help this new poster...FMPro on Apache?

Featured Replies

My question is in regard to using servers other than FMPro to publish a database(s). It's been a few

years since I have used FMPro. I've published several databases in which I used FMPro server and

custom web publishing (CDML and all that jazz). Now during my time away it seems as though Filemaker

has compartmentalized their product. My current understanding is that I would need FMPro 5.5

Unlimited to conducted custom web publishing using CDML. Is this correct? Also, the last time I did

this I set up a Mac computer as a server in which I used FMPro Server. This time I need to put the

database onto an Apache server--Unix i believe--although they may be using Linux. Now, I know a fair

amount about FMPro and webpublishing but almost nothing about servers and networks. My questions

is this--Is it possible to publish my database(s) using Custom Web Pubishing (and CDML) but putting all

this stuff on an Apache server? I want all the nice FMPro buzzers and whistles, but I don't want to use

FMPro as the Server software. Now, you're probably thinking this guy is hopelessly lost--which I may

be--but I'm at an instutution where an NT person will eventually help me with my vast area of

ignorance. I just want to know whether this is at all possible before I move forward and, potentially,

look more the fool.

Any response would be greatly appreciated.

For Web Publishing you need FM Unlimited if more than 10 IP addresses will use the database within a 12 hour period. frown.gif

FM Server will run on Linux; I don't think FM Unlimited is available on it yet. However, FMU will run on OS X, which is Unix; Apache will also run on OS X. FMU/FMS will also run on Win.

Hope this helps.

Here are the basics:

You can use Apache as a "front-end" for FileMaker Unlimited by configuring Apache to act as a proxy server for requests to FileMaker. In fact, this is a very good idea for both performance and security. For more info, see this previous post: http://www.fmforums.com/threads/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Board=UBB21&Number=19052

Please note that the referenced post gives example commands for setting up the proxy which apply to the 1.3.X versions of Apache and may or may not be accurate for the recently released 2.0.X versions.

The FileMaker Unlimited client can run on Mac (OS9, OSX) or Windows, but not Unix/Linux. The FileMaker Unlimited client does not have to run on the same machine as Apache, and it cannot run on the same machine as FileMaker Server. FileMaker Server exists for Mac, Windows, and Linux. Apache, as you probably know, exists for just about everything under the sun.
