  1. I have finally gotten some time to see if there is a way to use what appears to be a way to notify clients that an update is available from their client, AND have FileMaker Server send the update to them for installation. It would appear that each client has a preference where a plug-in to auto update can be checked off, but the configure button is greyed out. Also, maybe I need a Plug-in on the server side to make this work, but cannot find one in the files I have for installation. Is there such a thing, and where is this plug-in. Any help would be appreciated.
  2. Thanks for the reply. It's not a severe issue, but we prefer not to put any more programs on the C: than we have to. At least the provision for locating databases was not diminished. THAT would have been an issue. Thanks again! Otis
  3. During the installation of Server 9 Adv, I do not find a way to choose where I want to install the server files. It seems to go to C:/Program Files... and no choice along the way. Can someone help me find a way to install to a different location?
  4. Is there additional information that I should supply folks who wish to assist? I would really appreciate some assistance on this. Thanks all!
  5. I have created a script that calls for an import of data from another database. I put in the information about which file to import the data from, and which fields should be imported, but the next time I enter the database, and run the script, FileMaker seems not to have saved the information. Under V6 you used to 'save' the updates, but under 7 this dialog does not come up. Is there some other way I should 'save' the changes to this import script? The files are both served from FMServer7. Thanks!
  6. I want to e-mail a letter to a found set in my database. The letter will have record specific data in it. Is there a sample script? Should the letter be its own layout? I'm really clueless as to how to get started. I did a search in the forums, but couldn't find a solution. Thanks for any help or pointers to some other web resource!
  7. I'd like my front desk staff to keep track of phone calls and inquiry at the desk. I thought I would just create a field that was a serial number, and then create a button that would 'set next serial value'. But this does not work. Each day is a new record, and in this record, this value would be updated by just clicking on the button for the number of calls etc. I suppose that on creating the next days record, I would need to reset the serial number value back to 1. Can someone point me to an article or thread here that might help me? I looked for 'counter' but... Thanks!
  8. Did you ever find an answer to this question? As the old timer points out, there probably has been a previous post on this subject, but for a newbie, the question and answer might be relevant and useful. After a search, I did not find this duplicate post and would still like an answer. Maybe the sage could point a crooked finger to this duplicate post? Thanks!
  9. I'm running FM Server 5.5 for 30+ databases on a Win2000 Server. I use Veritas Backup Exec 8.6 to do nightly backups. Since moving from WINNT to Win2K, the backup software reports that the databases are corrupt (which they are not of course). One solution (from Veritas) would be to have FM Server stop serving the databases during the time backups are going on. Since none of the dbs are 24/7 critical, how could I have FM Server stop serving the dbs for an hour while the files are being backed up? Any suggestions? Thanks!
  10. Newbie here... I am running IIS on NT4 with FMServer and my databases on one server. In order to make the databases available to the web, I was going to run the WSC (Web Server Connector) on this same server. Should it be run on another machine? Why? Am I still missing a part of the picture? I've read the documentation and I'm still confused! Thanks for any help.
  11. I've done a search, and have done what I can, but seem not to be able to figure this one out myself, so here goes... I need to convert a date input into the two digit fiscal year... So if I input 9/13/01, a calculation is done... greater than or equal to 7/1/01 and less than or equal to 6/30/02 then the field gets "02" as the fiscal year. Can anyone help me? I'm just not getting the calculation at all. Thank you!
  12. I'm running FMP5.1 on WinNT. I'd like to set up FMP so that any user that logs on to a particular machine automatically uses TCP/IP and a default username for that machine. (IE User does not have to set network protocol or username on first use of FMP). Is there a way to set this up? Thanks!
  13. I have a db that I would like certain activities to be audited and leave a trail. For example, if a student prints a form, or whoever edits a file, should have a field(?) that their username is put in. This field keeps track of the last 10 names, so that if I am asked who edited the record and in what order, there is a trail. Is there a script that someone can recommend? I've not had much luck creating one myself. Thanks!
  14. That's the trick! No mommetary slow downs, no lost data. Since our use is low, this solution works great! Thanks!
  15. The cache flush is set to go off every hour. It would appear that our usage is such that we rarely need to go to cache to get data. (Lots of DBs, not a whole lot of activity, no performance issues.) Should I uncheck the "Flush Cache" box, and let FMServer do it on idle time, when there is a need? The FMServer manual makes no recommendation. Thanks!
  16. I've noted that FM Server5 stops and starts all hosted DBs about every hour for about 1 second. The message that this is being done for safe backup purposes, but the DB is only down for about 1 second before it is opened again for 'writes'. Is this normal? Why? Can it be stopped, or scheduled for when backups actually do occur? Thanks!
  17. Any update on this? My log file is so cluttered with non-info from FMP Server that I can't even sort for the useful stuff.
