Terminal Services - Citrix - Remote Users
belgiumbruno replied to Stonington's topic in FileMaker Server 11
We are working with 30 users on a citrix server. If you have a Cable connection and 2 good servers (application + fm), it's the best solution you can imagine. But after that, upgrading for 100's of users is as simple as for a single user. -
splitting data from layout ?
belgiumbruno replied to belgiumbruno's topic in Community Videos, Tips, & Techniques, Articles.
No v7 is fine for me. v6 is history . Thanks, Belgiumbruno -
Hi all, I am studying filemaker business tracker. Nice program !! I found something strange that I can not explain. On the layout settings you have a portal for modules. Although the vertical scroll bar is marked on, it does not appear. Can someone explain this ? FileMaker Version: 7 Platform: Windows XP

In fm 6.0 I used a lot of globals to put data from a customer to an invoice (both related with a constant). So in fm6.0 I started in the customerfile, used a script to put the custid in the global custid in the invoicefile and after creating a new record I put the global in the custid of the new invoice. I don't know if I used it well, but now I did the following: start in the customerfile, perform the script with custid as a scriptparameter, create a new invoice and put the scriptparameter into the custid in the invoice. It worked So you don't need all those globals anymore. Is this a correct use from the scriptparameter ? I wonder what will happen if 2 people use the same script ? ciao BelgiumBruno Version: v7.x Platform: Windows XP

I made a conversion from 6 to 7 and had the same feeling: the layoutcolors and fonts aren't that sharp. So there must be a solution in fm7 because in all other programs (even fm6) everything is sharp.

Hi, I converted an fm 6.0 application to fm 7 and experienced the same problem. I have a tabbed interface and when I click a button to go to another file it takes minutes. I also saw that with the conversion, a lot of filepaths were wrong BelgiumBruno Version: v7.x Platform: Windows XP

My first impressions are: I am happy and sad: Happy because: fm becomes a mix of the best things of fm and access Sad because: You have to rewrite your apps. because of the serious change I convert my fm6.0 28 file application . A lot of things went wrong. 1- the links between the files - in fm 7 databases - are corrupted. The links are pointing to another folder on my pc while all files are in the same folder 2- the colors in the layouts aren't that sharp anymore 3- the script on certain buttons are gone or moved a few pixels higher So rewriting will be the only possibility A lot of new things to learn. I need an new advanced book with all the new features + good examples I found a nice application on the nightwing website called simple booking system...very nice. It gives a good idea of the possibilities with the new relations (not only = but also >,<,...) A lot of new questions: -shall I make 1 db with all my tables in ? (easy to secure I think -shall I split it in different dbs ? -Is it easier to split the data from the layout ? Is there a difference in speed between those options (faster finding,...) I think a have to spend a lot of time on this forum the next few weeks,... BelgiumBruno Version: v6.x

Hi, I want summary + subsummary fields on a report. Because this are totals from thousands of calculated fields, it will take hours to make them. Is there another way to make this summary + subsummary fields. Ex. First make a script that put the calculated field in a number field and then make summaries of this fields ?? Is this faster ? thanks, Bruno

Hi, Did anyone made this kind of find for many fields ? Because this is great. Thanks Vaughan. Bruno

Thanks for your reply. But this was just a simple search. I have to work with at least 5 combinations. But now I am absolutely sure that there is no simple solution to find such things.

Hi, I wonder how I can find this kind of things suppose I have 3 fields 1- color 2- cars 3- price now I want to find all red, blue and grey BMW - Ford cars in stock with a price between 10000$ and 40000$ I want as less as possible requests.

I finally found the solution myself. I think it's interesting for everyone. I received a message that 1 file of the db (sales) was seriously damaged. For me it was not possible because I had several links to the sales and only 1 was not working (from purchase to sales). It only happened on my machine . All the other people (around 10) didn't have the problem. The problem was that on my machine there was a backup of old stuff. I deleted all fm files from my PC and the problem was solved. Isn't this a bug in fm. Even if you open the fmfiles with the host button it gets confused by old files that aren't working under fmserver : Bruno

it's a win 2k server and if it damages a file the file can not be openend from another file too.

Hi, I have a same kind of problem. I have several files with a tabbed interface. Each file can open all the other by clicking a tab. In 1 combination (from purchase to sale) the sale file doesn't open. Message: "Sale is not a filemaker file or it is seriously damaged" I don't have the message if I go from other files (ex. stock to sale). It's only in the combination purchase - sales that I have problems. even if I put the files from the server and put them on a stand-alone machine I don't have the damagemessage if I go from purchase to sales. Can it be a bad script in purchase although all the opening scripts are the same ? I never had crashes. another thought : maybe I have to relate these files via a constant and see what happens. A clean clone doesn't help.

We are using fmserver 5.5 and fm 6.0 on a win 2k terminal server. Sorting with the right mouse button is the tool we use very often. The strange thing is: On some users this feature does not work. Any ideas ?? The clients are win 98 win 2000 and win xp machines normally this is not an issue because the use of terminal server.

Year End Stock Counts/Line item Files
belgiumbruno replied to RStewart's topic in Relational Database Theory
I am also making an inventory system and I totaly agree with the suggestions. The only problem you have to taken into account is the fact that with this system your system becomes very big after a few years (or maybe already after a year). Also a lot of data is old and not frequently used anymore. But you can't delete this data because you work with calculated totals. I included an temp_archive and an archive field in my stock for the year end. At the end of the year I put the total of the stock in the temp_archive. then I delete the old data. Now my calculated stock is not correct anymore because of this deletings. So I made a script which puts the difference temp_archive(=total stock before delete)- stock in archive. The formula for the stock = purchase-sales-archive. With this trick you can delete old items so that your db doesn't become too big (and sloooooooooooowww) -
Will, 1 terminal server win2k machine where everyone uses filemaker pro 6.0 with the host button to another dedicated win2k server machine with fm server to the db. Everything works fine except that sometimes the cpu=100% (it's fm because i checked taskmanager). I am now bussy for more than a year with fm. It's a great program to design difficult db but I have no experience with the limitations. So I constantly have to change some things in the programming. Ex. I am bussy with a stockmanagment system. the total in stock is a calc. field (stock purchase-stock sold). In the beginning I put this field simply on the layout. You could see immediately what was in stock. The problem was that I constantly have to search on this field. Finding on a calc. field takes minutes so I had to script the calculation. Now it's a normal indexed number field with a fantastic searc speed. Now I begin to understand all the people in this forum who do scripting during the night. They let the scripts calculate all these kind of fields. With this small example I will tell that I understand the working of fm but I still have to find it's negative points. I think that I will know all the bottlenecks of fm within 6 months when everyone in the company uses it. thanks, Bruno

Hi, so that's intresting. a bad wire can cause 100% of cpu ? How can you explain that ? But how can I increase the network kb? The rest looks good. Bruno

Hi, No my problem is that I wanted to know if it is a known problem for fm. On the clientside you can't do anything wrong. Put fmpro on the pc, click host to go to the fmserver and there you are. So if my cpu goes to 100% it must be a hardwareproblem or a common problem in fm. That's why I mentioned dos-programs on a win2k terminalserver. It's a well known problem that it takes all the cpu to run. tought that fm had the same sickness. Are there any settings you can change on clientside ?? thanx, Bruno

the terminal server machine is a compaq proliant -win2k server - intel pentium III 600mhz - 1024ram - raid5 hd 9.1gb . fmpro is installed on it . the fmserver is -like fm wants it - on a seperate machine. All the clients enter the db via ts (

Hi all, we are using fmserver with windows 2000 terminal services. So fmserver on dedicated win2k server machine (works fine) and everyone enters the data via fmpro on the terminal server. The problem I have is on this ts machine. fmpro takes sometimes 100% of the cpu (and not only when difficult things are done) server specs : raid 5 - 1024meg ram - 600mhz processor How to avoid ?? Thanx, Bruno

Hi, To calculate the pieces in stock I have a total in stock field (=unstored calculation Purchasepiece-sum(sold)). Because of the fact that we need to search alot on this field, I made a field on the layout that can be indexed. So I made a button that updates the totals that inserts the total in stock in the indexed field I wonder what is best make a loop that goes through the whole stock and use set field or just use replace contents - relookup contents thanx Bruno
