V.4 - FMP dedicated server

[color:"red"] I am new to FMP, using v4. All databases are web based and we want to put them onto a dedicated server. I know I have to change the port, but do I have to install Appleshare and put the Web volume on this server? Or can the web volume remain on the file server?

Filemaker Server would be running on its own machine. Put the database file on this machine. No Appleshare, no File Sharing, just Filemaker Server.

Filemaker Unlimited would be running on its own machine, or alternately could run on the same machine as the web server. Personally I prefer running it on a seperate machine so that you do not have to mess with port numbers and such.

Leave the Appleshare File Server as a seperate machine.

If by v4 FMPro4.0 is meant, then there is no Unlimited version. FMPro4.0 is one of the good things to come out of FMI. Since then they broke it up into many parts at many prices.

If you are running FMPro 4.0 you will need the latest updaters through FMPro4.0.v3 on a dedicated machine (preferred).
